i noticed that there aren't a lot of entries yet for the BCA nationals in Vegas .
As the tournament starts in 2 months is this normal ?
For example in the 10 ball challenge there are only 2 players at the moment !!!
9-ball challenge has only 15 entries at this point .

Entry Update

Entries seem to be down about 30% from last year...unless there is a big late surge.

2013 entries: Open Singles 1085----current 2014 entries 720

Open 9-Ball 341 ---------------- 206

Men's Senior Singles 251 ------------------ 170

Women's Senior Singles 52 ------------------ 34

Maybe the Rio has had an effect on the field size........

Was curious and just checked the final numbers for the 8ball Open Singles.

902 entries down from 1085

That's a 17% drop

I think the main reason is moving the event to the middle of summer. The move never made any sense to me and definitely keeps 90%+ of us Canadians away that would rather enjoy our amazing summers rather than bake in the Vegas heat.

Our league alone is responsible for a drop of about 30, 8MOS entries. First time I entered about 10 years ago there was around 1400 entries and there used to be more than that.

The more expensive Rio doesn't help, but I don't think that is the determining factor.

A lot of foreign players will not make the trip due to high airplane tickets , May is a lot cheaper to buy tickets and yes it's also very hot in July .

This is my favorite event and look forward to going every year for 10-11 days. There were 3 changes that went into effect last year and hopefully CSI will figure out the main culprit to fix the dropoff in attendance.

1. Move to the Rio. I don't stay there so I can't really speak to the cost difference of food, drinks, etc. but heard several people complaining (unhappy people are louder than happy people so grain of salt) about food and drink prices though. As far as the pool I think it's a nice upgrade for the rooms and parking (for those of us that drive to the Rio).

2. Move to July. I'm guessing middle of July wasn't the first choice but with the WSOP and whatever other events the Rio holds probably the only option. I've heard people complain about the heat, but, haven't heard someone say they won't go cause it's in July.

3. Green Fees. Again, I've heard people complain (mostly people playing more than 1 event or wanting to play more than 1 event) but haven't heard someone NOT going due to green fees. I've heard people say "I'm not playing this event because of green fees" but I don't really buy that. Most people are flying in and staying at a casino for 7-10 days and claim they can't/don't want to afford another $35. I'm not buying that.

Personally, I go for 10-11 days and my wife comes so it's our vacation as well so when I go out of a tourney or have a day off we are on the strip gambling and drinking. I don't play mini's and usually only warm up 1-2 games before my first match so green fees not ideal for me but for those people who go there only/mostly for pool then I think it's a good deal.

Here are the totals so far and throughout the years. I will update the team when they post the numbers. The numbers in bold under 2014 are the only brackets/entries verified by CTS.

Looks like entries for 2015 are comparable to 2014 for Mens divisions...

Mens Open - 879 this year. 902 last for -23
Mens Leisure - 187 this year vs 171 last for +16
Mens Advanced - 110 this vs 108 last for +2
Mens Masters - 27 this vs 30 last for -3
9 Mens Open - 319 this vs 303 last for +16
Seniors - 165 this vs 207 last for -42
Super Senior - 173 this vs 177 last for -4
Mens Teams - 482** this vs 465 last. **This is based on the total number of players 2892 with each team averaging 6 people This could be as low as 413 if each team averages 7/team but that seems high to me. I'd guess it's around 6-6.5 on average so total teams likely 445-480 or so.

I'm happy to see not another big dropoff in attendance this year. Looking forward to another fun year.

Good News

Good News!

Entries are up this year over 2014 and we are looking forward to a terrific event! Best of all, we accept onsite entries for several events so it will get even better. Hope to see everyone there!

I think one of the main issues is having it at the Rio. With very few exceptions, there are not many cheap places to eat. Most pool players don't want to sit down to eat expensive meals 2/3 times per day. The room rates are pretty pricey too for the average Joe. I don't buy this(it's a suite) song and dance. It's just a large room, a suite would have a separate living room and possibly a microwave in it.

I love the greens fee; no more carrying a pocket full of $1 coins around and worrying about all the balls coming down the shoot. I like to get in practice whenever I can so it's a huge savings for me :)

I would love to see this event moved back on the strip. This would give us things to do when we are knocked out of the tourney.

I have my room booked at the Gold Coast and it's a short walk across the street and through the parking lot to the Rio. The buffet for breakfast is under $7 and dinner is $9.95 I think. This includes your drink, no alcohol, but I'm good with a coffee or soda.

Chris,

While you're at Gold Coast, I highly recommend eating at Ping Pang Pong. More traditional Chinese than American style. Prices are reasonable.

Agree with the green fees. In most years I probably play way over 100 games of eight and nine ball Both practice and tournament. Just left the VNEA event. They do green fees as well but much higher prices.

Very interested in seeing how the Fargo Rate thing goes. Right now I'm not a fan. My mind is open.

See you at the tables.

Just noticed an entry from Belgium in the 9 ball event. Any chance it's you? If so, would like to meet you during the event.

just an update --

From our point of view, things are going very well.

As of a week ago, entries are up 15% overall this year compared to the same time last year. We are excited about that because it is one sign of the degree to which people are embracing Fargo Ratings.

Entries started out slower and then now have picked up. I think people are realizing that whether they and players in their area are established or not, they benefit from the knowledge we have about OTHER established players. Also I think people like being associated with something big, with pro players playing right there in front of you, riding the elevator with you, and sitting next to you at the bar. If pool is in your blood, there is no better place to be than the BCAPL national championships at the Rio in July...

One thing that is gratifying about what we do is that unlike most endeavors--where you can better or worse with time--we can only get better. More data makes us better, always.

In the northeast, where as you know we have been thinner with tournament data, we have recently worked with Mike Z to get in the last few Joss events, and Mike is excited at how well the established players are ranked. And we are working now on matches scores from the big SBE amateur event that Allen H. sent us. For you we recently got in an event from last December at Diamond Billiards (Greece NY).

Anybody who comes out and plays in July--singles, team, minis-- will get better rated and will contribute to getting their local area better rated.

Christoph,

We will both be playing in the 9 ball event on Wednesday. Interestingly enough, we are within a point or two of having the identical Fargo rating! I will be sure to introduce myself on Wednesday. I'm usually wearing a Las Vegas Cue Club shirt during play. The first beer is on me!!!! Incidentally, you can always contact me through the Yahoo emblem in my AZ signature.
