The Kos Have Met in a Final Before

No doubt, given the way the brackets at the WPA World 10-ball Championship now look, some are wondering whether the Ko brothers have ever faced each other in an event final. In fact, they did once when I was present. From Friday, July 18 , 2014 to Sunday, July 20, 2014, the CSI Invitational 10-ball was contested at the Rio. The Ko brothers both reached the final and it was Ko Pin Yi who took down the first prize.

We'll see if history repeats itself today at the Rio.

Flavor of the moment? Filler may just be on as great a run as we've ever seen in pool.

December 2017: A 5-0 campaign at the Mosconi, earning him the Mosconi Cup MVP.

June 2018: Won the World Pool Series 10-ball event against a killer field with some of the straightest shooting I have ever seen.

Dec 2018: Won the World 9-ball Championship against a stellar field.

Jan 2019: Ran 285 balls in straight pool to set the high run record at Derby City.

Jan 2019: Beat JL Chang 17-14 in 10-ball in a high stakes action match at Derby City.

Feb 2019: Won the Eurotour event at Leende in the Netherlands

April 2019: Topped the greatest ever field of 256 at the US Open 9-ball

July 2019: Tied for third or better at the WPA World 10-ball Championship

The only players that ever got this hot in recent times are Varner about thirty years ago and Immonen 10 years ago. Neither Shaw or Shane ever had a stretch like this.

Agreed that a long race between Filler and Chang would be super close.

And to think that even this trail of devastation sells his run a bit short. In June (I think) of 2017, at the very beginning of this list, Joshua won the China Open, besting Chang Jung-Lin in the Finals.

So he's won pool's 3 main "majors" - China Open, W9B, US Open, in the last two-ish years. The 4th major in any given year has been a bit of a wildcard, but this Predator 10 Ball World Championship holds that honor this year I suppose, and Josh of course stands poised to claim it as well.

Ko gets two games back, 3-2 Filler. Both players look pretty sharp.

You said it. These guys are doing some amazing things. A heavyweight bout in every sense. They are so aggressive. Loved Ko's bank of the 2 ball in rack 4, and also loved Filler's two way shot in rack six.

These are two very confident players.

Jimmy Wych needs to go a lit easier on the cliches.

Rack 8 was a masterpiece followed by an improbable anticlimax. Filler plays a brilliant two way bank with his jump cue and Ko responds with a table length jump carom shot that he comes with. Wow! Ko doesn't get out and the subsequent safety battle is won by Filler, but Josh fails to run out and Ko has tied the match at 4-4. Enough ebbs and flows in rack 8 for an entire match!

Incredible exchange of jump shots in that rack!

Rack 11 another classic. Filler not quite up to the long one ball while cueing from against the top rail. Beautiful diagonal bank missed but played two ways by Ko leaves Filler in jail, setting up a win for Ko and he has a 6-5 lead. The quality of the tactical play in this match has been breathtaking.

Ko tries a safe after the break, but leaves a table-length shot on the 1, cueball stuck on the end cushion. Filler misses the 1. Ko plays safe, and Filler misses the kick.

Ko takes BIH and runs out to go up 6-5.
