Every now and then I like to do a straight pool challenge as a practice, but I just don't know how to set that first ball to get the flow going. Any advice or videos?

The one shown here at about the 30-sec. mark, CB into the top of the rack off the OB near the center of the table, is used frequently by pros at 14.1 challenges: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Je5faff3uvc&feature=youtu.be

Some players go with a standard side-of-the-rack break.

For practice, I think the latter is better, as it is more likely to come up in an actual game.

The best way to practice is to setup a standard side of the rack breakshot with the cb and ob parallel to the long rail. The ob in the center of the table is only good when trying to get a high run. Don't "practice" that as your core regimen because it's not realistic in regular game play.
