The places we play at would never let us stay that late.

Actually the owner of the bar we play at(Which has only one table unfortunately) has to lock the doors at 1am until we finish. Only a couple places we play has more than one table.

Wow....just wow. The more I read, the more I realize how good we have it here.

We start at 7. After two hours, we go to two tables. Latest we get done is around 11, occasionally a few minutes after that, most times 10:30-10:45.

And yes, I have a SL3 who has had matches against another 2 or 3 go over 40 innings
before. I don't know what to suggest for your situation. The places we play at would never let us stay that late.

You said that after 2 hours you go to 2 tables. I assume that means that your team plays 8 ball or 9 ball only and not double jeopardy? When you have people playing both at the same time most of the time there is only enough tables for 1 of each match. Everyone once in a while a place will have enough tables to get 3 matches going at once to speed up the night, but in that case it can be more difficult to score.

You are correct, we play 8-ball on Tuesdays and 9-ball on Thursdays...no double jeopordy here. I can see how that complicates matters.

In my old division this came up and they let the player forfeit his break. It's a disadvantage but at least in APA 8 ball the table isn't automatically open after pocketing a single ball on the break.

oooh - that'd work! ok. i actually did that in an 8-ball tourney when Lee Brett was here (i forgot, i did play one night back in NOV - KK9 registered me without my knowledge). everyone i played - i gave them the break. (i forgot that they'd have to break for me if i won the flip.) now that i recant it, it probably doubled as a shark-move...? male or female, none of them could believe i was giving them the break.

on the flip side, the rule kind of sucks, cause my guy can pocket 3-5 on his break. if i play 9-ball, i'll have to tell them YOU SAID i could have a stand-in.

wow! 15mins? this is going to ROCK their world! Oh. My. Go_ !
they have called the LO, 30mins after start time, cause only 1 or 2 players from other team were present, and asked what to do - and the LO said: just wait for them....
OMG.

THANKS JOHN!

First round of NAPA playoffs last night. I had to win 4 in an 8-4 8-ball race. I figured I would have a chance here because my 8-ball safety play is better than rotation.

In the first 6 games I had 3 innings. 2 of which ended after 1 shot. One of those was a brain-fart where I got down on the cue ball and started a practice stroke and nudged the damn cueball.

I came alive a little bit, won a game with a nice two-rail kick on the key ball and good position on the 8 then almost broke-and-ran the next but on the key ball I had a long straight shot and the cue ball was right on the cushion. The ball hit the point... and my opponent ran out.

At the end (I lost 8-2), my opponent (who's a really nice guy) said something like "I know I have to get out when I'm at the table because you can run out if I give you a chance." So that's nice to hear.

My team ended up losing so no more NAPA until...? Well, Nationals in June, but the LO still hasn't said if he's going to run something over the summer or not.

No more matches this session! Woohoo!

I won my 9-ball match 38-18, with one break and run. I was up 31-7 at one point  but then he came back a little.

I was breaking pretty sporty. I had two wired combos on the 9 after the break. Doesn't give squat for points, but it would be nice in regular play!

If there were two players from your opponent's team present at start time there is no reason not to put one of them up. BTW, this is APA that I was speaking of. Don't know about other league rules.

Got my ass kicked tonight, 38-18, a 17-3 beating.

My worst loss ever.

I always struggle with this guy, and tonight he was on fire. I dogged a couple, but he was really shooting well, regardless of my donkeying those shots.

Beginning to really dislike 9-ball. 8-ball suits me so much better

I think my worst, so far, was getting beat by the SL4 that ran every rack. It was 18-2 or 17-3, I don't remember the score exactly.

Good thing the APA just shows Wins/Losses. My balls pocketed vs opponent score would be horrible! lol

Bummer man. I'd much rather play 9 though. Just wish I could. No 9B in our league and none in the area. Too many shitty players around I guess. :D

My worst was losing 5-1 to a SL6 about a month ago. Was the worst I've played yet. Combine that with this guy's best ever match and there ya go. And to make matters more embarrassing, he went down to a SL5 two weeks ago. Stupid handicap system....really. AND a guy on my team went up to a 6 this week with a 30% win percentage this session. Really screws up the team handicap limit structure now.

I can totally relate to that as I am 150% more of an 8 ball player vs a 9 ball...BUT I really should play more 9 (or even 10) to work on my position play. You can get away with some worse shape in ball with more targets to choose from.

Well, we survived last night, barely. The team did not play well (they blamed my eye of the tiger link in our facebook group I posted). We lost the first 3 matches getting 2 points total. I then played their 6 who I beat before. I scratched on the first game and made a bonehead miss on the 2nd game...great, 5-2 race now. I finally got it together though and won hill hill to get 2 points. Our 3 won her match as well so I believe we got 6-7 points (don't remember if she got 3 or 2). My buddy from the other team stopped up to see how we were doing. He got a text from the team confirming that they made up some ground on us in points (we were up 4 prior to the start), but not enough....sooo it looks like we won points and get to skip the very long middle tournament to go straight to masters or LTC they call it now.

Oh...I shipped top gun for the 6's/7s as well :D. I'm tired but pleased on the finish of our team last night on the last two matches.

There's an obvious reason why I do better in 8-ball. I don't hit the ball very hard, very often. So if I miss a shot in 9-ball, its usually hanging there for my opponent.

I see it, every week. It's obvious that I need to learn how to hit balls harder. Or to stop missing. :p

I've never heard any good player say they need to hit the balls harder. I don't understand. Its usually the exact opposite.

9 ball is just a tougher game. I almost feel like people shouldn't even look at 9 and 10 ball
until they're like... APA6 or higher (no idea what your rank is, just generalizing).
If someone can't run an open 9b rack, then it's pointless to break or make the 1 and 2 balls.

In fact they're more likely to lose points breaking (dry breaks, hooked after break)
than they are to gain points.

APA 9 ball with the point system I guess is an exception.
Any balls you can run are helpful.
But the game does require some very firm shots that move the cue ball
all over the table. If you're used to gently connecting the dots in 8 ball,
it will be a challenge to get more than 3 or 4 at a time in 9b.

So then what happens is the rolls play a huge factor in the APA format.
The rolls determine who collects those 3 or 4 balls. One miss leaves them hooked
and gets you several points, another miss leaves a hanger and they get the points.

I think your best bet is always play 2-way position on any shot
where you feel like you can miss. Leave the cue ball at the other end of the table.
Ask yourself "is it better to overcut or undercut this?" (overcut usually works out better).
2-way shape is the soul of 9 ball and makes you one of those guys
who is tough to beat because he always seems to 'get lucky'.

thankfully this apa session is finally over. it was my worst session ever in apa as far as my win /loss record goes.
39% in 8 ball and 33% in 9 ball.

some how we managed to qualify for 9 ball playoffs this weekend. we play the lo's team.

if we can get past there 8 and 6 we might have a chance. i am debating whether to dump on those 2 guys and try to blow away their 2;s ...3's and 4's.

they have an 8...a 6...2-4's...2-3's and a 2 available.

we have a 6... 2-5's...3-3's . well i do have a 9 available but i would have to use all my 3's and i doubt any of them could beat their 2 let alone either of their 4's.

its hell trying to stay competitive when you have 3 players go up in a session.

my 8 was raised to a 9

my 4 was raised to a 5

my other 4 was raised to a 6

oh yea..had 4 players go up. forgot about my 2 being raised to a 3.

Those are pretty nice payouts. How much are your weekly dues and how long is your session? I think about a year ago, a few friends and I finished first in the top flight and I was a few points behind one of them in the league mvp, but got playoff mvp, I think. The payout I got was somewhere around $300 for everything, maybe a little less. Our weeklies are only $7 with a 12 or 14 week schedule or something. What's worse is that the bca division I was playing in at the time was one of the ones that paid more to the better teams.
