I played a game vs myself yesterday, using the Straight Pool deluxe app for the first time.

Game was played on a 9' Saunier Wilhem table, using Aramith (which set unknown) balls, with a measles cue ball. Unknown cloth. Delta 13 select rack.

Me. "Ghost One(me)"
Points. 40. 31
Handicap. 0 0
High Run. 5 5
SPD Avg 0.9 0.8
BPI 0.9 0.8
avg time/shot 19sec 20sec
Total time 30min 29min

Turn Ends:
Misses 88%(42/48) 75%(36/48)
Fouls 10%(5/48) 15%(7/48)
Safeties 2%(1/48) 10%(5/48)

Shot Quality:
Converted BSO: 100%(2/2) 0/3
SPD AVG 0.9 0.8
Effective Safeties 0/1 20%(1/5)

Obviously, I'm a straight up beginner at straight pool. I believe my weaknesses right now are worrying too much about raising my high run, and worrying too much about getting shape and not focusing on the shot at hand.i also need to work on pattern play, and breaking up clusters after making a shot.

I'm most proud of the 2 successful BSO (break shot opportunities) as before last night, I've never made a successful re-break at the end of a rack.

Thumbs Up

Chuck.... I found your post very interesting and had to write a few comments. For a beginner, you have the right attitude (which is a big positive) when it comes to learning how to play correctly. Remember.... everyone has started where you are at. Keep going and you will become better & better. Go to my profile page and I have a few Instructional video links posted that might help you. Good Luck and keep us posted on your achievements.

Two new practice games from Friday night. New high run! 10 balls. I need to continue work on pattern reading, break shots, and relaxing and letting myself just make shots sometimes. Still way to many misses. Stack reading and combo making has improved a little after reading those sections in Mosconi's book.

I've decided to turn this thread into my straight pool development journal. Played two practice games Friday, the first to 50, the second a quick race to 30 while my ride home was on it's way. Pretty bad play all around. This time, instead of playing a full game, I simply had Ghost One "miss" in order to have the full stats under my name. A few times I forgot, lol.

very cool Chuck.
A couple questions...
Does the app work with an ipad?
we have had one for maybe a year and a half and I just recently began checking it out.
I love this thing.

last week I deposited a check with it!
it used to take me a week or two to get to the bank.

Do you have to stop playing to enter information into your device?
That might be a momentum killer.

Can you tell me how it works?
thx
steven

The app is GREAT with an iPad. I have scored 30 or so matches one mine. Good stuff!

If I'm deciphering your information correctly you are a beginner. My recommendation for beginners is to try equal offense.

Yes, beginner in straight pool. Basically I'm playing equal offense against myself, using the app.

Hi Steven, here's some basic info on the app: http://fourteen-one.com/app/

I wrote it, so happy to answer any questions about it

Thanks,

Stats/results from Fri, 2 Oct

Same location. I realize that I really need to calm down, and just enjoy the ride. I'm too results oriented, and it's screwing me up. Need to work on: shot making, secondary break shots, break shots.

Also, maybe it's just in my head, but I'm having a much hard time playing 14.1 on this table than I do 8- or 9-ball, which makes no sense. Seems like if the ball even touches the pocket facing, the ball is gonna jaw back and forth. The pockets are big, so it's either the cut angle, or it's just me. I'll post pics of the pockets after the stats.

The pockets

These are the pockets on the old Saunier Wilhem table I've been playing on. My Monday night APA 8-ball team plays on this table. They look wide as hell, so I can't figure out why the balls are rattling so much.

Over a month since I last played. Improved my average high run from six balls to eight. Still need to work on the same things as last posting, however, I have started to read the patterns a little better, and thinking several shots ahead.
Need to work on finding the key ball, as that screwed me a few times the other night.
Also need to figure out the right speed on secondary break shots. Having a hard to getting enough cue ball speed to get to the stack, without rattling the object ball in the pocket jaws.

If I'm deciphering your chart correctly you made 50 balls in 38 innings.

Are you playing 14.1 or equal offense?

The way the balls open depends a lot on the conditions. If you can, clean the cloth and the balls before you start. Also, really focus on racking them tightly. You shouldn't have to hit them very hard in most situations.
