Gambling With Someone That Can't Afford To Lose (long)

This never would've been a question if money was put-up beforehand - maybe placed on top the light?

Making someone wait for a production to occur (atm, etc) after they win is poor form, unless discussed prior. ..In this case, the guy lied about having it on him! Even tackier!

Good point. But because I've been playing this guy for over a year, and he's always made good eventually, I don't make him post. Now if we raised the stakes to $100 or more a set or game, I think that I would make him post. For a stranger my "post ahead of time amount" is anything $20 or more.

Im not wired like that either...do something nice for the guy and dont say shit...just pay his time one night or if theres an all day rate pay his so when he walks in and it's on the house he'll know in his mind where it came from. You dont owe him a thing but truth is you owe it to yourself to set it right. If you've played months with a guy it cant be all about the money...go with the humanity that your gut is telling you

In my experience, if you don’t gamble with people who have very little money, you’re not gonna gamble much at all. There’s a reason people who don’t have much money gamble a lot - they’re not very smart about money. And the converse applies to people who have money. Sure, there are high rollers, but they’re the exception by far.

Very wise observation. I've met very few gambling/player types who have a clue about money management. Also, when I try to educate them, they don't want to hear it. They seem happier when constantly trying for that "big score" that never comes.

I won’t feel guilty. I feal, the sooner I can bust him the sooner he will be on his way to curing his gambling addiction.

On one occasion I busted a guy at around $100. We had started playing at $5. He got up $35, at that point we had been playing long enough for me to adjust to the table and conditions. When I started shooting back, he wanted to play for $10. When it was even he wanted to play for $20. When I won the last game he told me, “I have the $20 but I need it for groceries”. I told him I didn’t want it. I was just trying to make him quit. I then bought him a beer and he told me he had made $1000 scores on that table.

P.S.

I had not played on that table previous. I did make it my home table and did well, supplementing my income.

Yep! Gamblers are very good at bragging about wins. They seem to forget the losses.

I am 69 yrs old and have gambled since I was in grade school in some form or another. I still have the 1st Beatles album I won playing 1 on 1 basketball or maybe it was horse, another basketball game we used to play. When I started playing pool that's all we did was gamble 25 cents a game 9 ball in the late 60's, 10 dollar 1 pocket in the 80's was kind of the standard bet in the pool room I played in. I have to drive 60 miles 1 way to get to a real pool room now, so I play better then I ever have but just for fun at the local sr ctr which is still about 18 miles 1 way. Here's the deal. I go to the casinos and gamble, and I do ok, but if I lose they don't offer to give me my money back. If you can't afford to lose, don't gamble. Its like some players don't get that when you bet you can beat the other player, you're gambling. When I gamble I play to win money, and I don't play to win and give the other player their money back. If I lose, I pay on the spot. I'm gambling to win money, or I would not gamble. Sorry about the rant, but I get tired of pool players that can't play, don't know how to make a game, and cry when they lose.

some people are going to lose all their money because that is what they do. maybe some like to punish themselves or feel guilty about having money . some are just stupid. you arent their father and since they are going to lose it why not be the one to take it.

Then he starts quietly packing up his stuff and putting his jacket on, while I'm just standing there wondering when he plans to pay me. Awkward. Finally he says to me, "what?"

right there is when i stop feeling bad for him and think of my favorite quote from goodfellas

If $50 would make or break someone's financial situation, even temporarily, he shouldn't be gambling. The guy has a problem.

I haven't been that broke since I was injured and couldn't do my paper route for a few weeks...in 1973.

Well, technically he lost $135 total to me. But I get your point. Many people in this country do live paycheck to paycheck though.

I'd say most-Recently a study indicated 40% of Americans could not cover a sudden $400 emergency. You are supposed to have at least 3 months of pay available in case you have an emergency and that is a very low standard imo.

I'm feeling a little guilty, but should I?

No, you gave him every opportunity to cut his losses.

If he has any brains, he will have learned a valuable lesson.
If he lacks a brain, you may have done him a favor.
If he comes back for more, it is he that is making himself poor.

OP:

Anyone that cant afford to play that cheap doesn't even need to "be in a room". They need to be "on the job"......SOMEWHERE........doing something to correct their financial situation/stability.

Having said ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ lol....... if you dont take it, someone else will.

Not a hard decision.

Then again, if your really that worried about it, lay down on him just enough to break even......or close.

Either that or not play......"IF" it bothers you that much.

Low standard? Lol...... there isn't a standard "that low".

Three months of salary as "emergency funds" is, well....IMO.....a sure sign of one of two things:

Either they are very young and just starting out

Or

Like some and didn't prepare for the future and are now a tax burden on the people "that did save for the future".....

Here's the thing about him. If I didn't clean him out and if he had won even one set, he most certainly would have kept challenging me to keep playing so that he could try to make some money. I guess that I was in between a rock and a hard place really. I had no choice but to clean him out I guess.

Well, I wouldn't feel bad in the least.

I would consider him an idiot/fool and you know what they say about a fool and their money, right?
