Ferule lengths?

What differences do the length of an ivory ferule or any material for that matter make with the playability of the cue?

Some may argue this one: The longer the ferrule, the more whip/ deflection. The shorter the ferrule, the more stiff it hits. I've noticed this from house cues and junk cues I had around.

What ever the ferrule does, it does more if it is longer. Ivory gives a hard sounding hit. A longer ivory ferrule increases that. A soft ferrule produces more spin on the cue ball and a longer soft ferrule will produce even more spin. If the ferrule causes deflection, a longer one will give more deflection and so on.

What kind of soft ferules produce more spin? And what kind of ferrules create more deflection? How bout phonelic or that Ivorine X?

By deflection, I think you are referring to squirt. Squirt is the effect of mass in the foremost six inches of the cue. If you figure maple has a base of 0 on a mass scale, then any ferrule with a mass of greater than 0 will increase squirt. Predators are hollowed at the end to reduce the mass up front. Since ferrules are heavier than maple, the more ferrule material there is the more squirt the shaft will have. A thin walled short ferrule would have less "deflection" than a longer thicker one.

Meucci ferrules, ABS and some PVC ferrules are among the softer plastics that produce more spin. Aegis is one of the harder ferrules that produce more deflection. The older ferrule material that is made out of the same substance as a cue ball is another one. Then there are many in between ferrules that should provide about any hit someone could ask for.

Different degrees of deflection happen on different types of ferrules depending also on the shaft taper, ferrule length, grade of shaft etc. Hence, softer ferrules could also deflect more if put on a whippi/stiff/ x-taper shaft and same also for harder ferrules. Popular lengths nowadays is from 1/2 - 3/4 in ferrules.
