What was the format for the US Amateur 14.1 Championship?

Most of the tournaments of the time (pre-1950s) seemed to be full round robin with some kind of qualifying events. Travel was a lot more expensive and time consuming. Some events were double round robin. Every match was likely to be good with that format. It justified charging admission and having referees and scorekeepers.

Double elimination is an atrocity that was introduced in the 1960s.
