Sorry, I think you are all smoking crack, teenagers don't belong in Casinos.

I played poker every day for three months at the Stardust hotel in Vegas when I was only 19. I made my expenses and had enough left over to visit the poolrooms and get fleeced for whatever I had left. :D
P.S. I went with $1,500 and came home with $1,500. The mob ran the Stardust and just about all of Vegas then. I could get free meals in the casino every day and was never asked for my ID. The mob guys liked me because I wasn't afraid to get in the games and gamble with the cheats. Hell, I didn't know any better. But I did know how to play Seven Card Stud and understood odds better than almost all of them.

That's cool, I am a noted poker player (Hold 'em of course not stud). Cheating at poker in a Casino? Wow, must have been wild. Obviously no automatic shufflers, but a set up (deck) change? An extra scramble? Or do you mean like Yellow lens glasses? ""Signaling" only works in the movies. Don't mean to hijack, I could talk about poker forever.

Where do you have to be 21, obviously not in the middle area where the slim to no cue venders are anymore. I assume it’s only the big room down stairs and the action room? The big heads behind the Derby don’t control the hotel, nor places like the restaurants. I mean FFS they stop adults at the top of the escalator who don’t even know there’s a tournament going on and are just trying to use the business center. The whole thing is a complete shit show.

First of all in some casinos back then they used to pass the deal from player to player.
At the Stardust sometimes the dealers were in with one or more of the players, and then you had the guys who would hold out cards. I had to be on the lookout for everything, but if I knew when to play (and against who), and stay out of the cheats way I could actually make money. Let's just say it was a learning experience.

P.S. I stuck to the 2-4 and 3-6 games and stayed away from the 5-10 game, which was the big game back then. That was where more funny stuff went on.

Jack Potter went their....might’ve been 14
An 18 year-old won the 9-ball once...can’t remember his name

Keith Thompson. I believe he was 19 when he won. He was a pretty good 9-Ball player, maybe the seven or eight ball under the best players. He went home to Texas and kind of disappeared after that. A lot of guys were looking to play him and he ducked out fast.

Years ago I got as high as 30-60 even dabbled a hand or two in the 40-80 and then switched to no limit tournament and never looked back. Its all about the slow march, not the richter scale that is cash. (even limit or maybe especially limit.)

I have never been there. The few reviews I had time to read were mixed.

Why do you say that?

I agree with the other guy. I've been there three times. Unless somethings changed since last year, Its hard to believe a junior tournament would be held there

My friend will be 6 months shy of his 21st birthday. He has been to the last 10 Derbies with his Dad.

It’s most unfortunate, as he plays pool full time, usually cashes and has been on and off the road for the last handful of years. This is obviously the biggest event for him of the year, as Pro Events he struggles to cash in.

He mentioned to me last night that he will probably be switching careers. Sad to see another Junior national champion becoming disillusioned with the game.

My dad (Police Officer) took me to DMV to get a fake ID (brothers birth cert) when I was 18 with the understanding that I would use it to join a league and get into bars to play pool....no drinking

I never drank in a bar and never tried to buy alcohol with the ID. The bar that I frequented knew I was not 21 but they were okay so long as it was a good ID.

Just a tad dramatic, don't you think? He'll be 21 six days layer and this has him "disillusioned"? Really? If that's the case he might need to quit.
