I agree. BnR's in 8-ball are not as common as BnR's in 9/10-ball. In APA 8-ball I don't have a single break and run. I have multiple in APA 9-ball.
With the two sets I played Tuesday, I broke 10 times and only 2 were BnR's.

Setting a handicap or judging a handicap by BnR's in 8-ball isn't accurate.

Maybe it's my 9b break, but I'm still working on it. Getting an 8b bnr is much more common for me. I consider barbox 8 my game, though. If I could play 9b as well, I'd be a happy camper. Probably only a 9 because I can run balls when I get a second chance at the table! :(

JBB: In my LO's territory, I can see the stats on all players on all teams in the area. Once in a while, I go through the rosters and locations to see if there's anywhere close by that I can stop by to find a game. I'm a little lazy, so usually nowhere's close enough.

Hmmm...wish we could do that. All I can see on the other teams are the "matches played" numbers for each player. Are you a team captain? I've asked our captain if he has access to expanded stats for the other teams and he said no. I guess its something that LOs can allow if they care to.

Damn APA website has been down most of the last two days.

Just snap 4-5 balls on the break and the rest will fall into place :D

I've been able to log in a few times, but it either goes god-awful slow or errors out. Our LO allows us to see everything in the area, including history of years past. Yeah, they can adjust what it shows and who can see what.

I can almost always get one or two.. unless you're not counting the cb. :( My masters team captain was trying to help me a little with my break last night. May get a chance to try it out tonight.

I'm almost the complete opposite. I play much better in 9b. In 42 8b matches I have only one BnR but I've actually ran out off my opponent's dry break 3 times i think. :p

Thanks...to my credit I always (try) to play the highest handicapped players, so these wins are not vs 2s, 3s, 4s for the most part unless someone is ducking me. I wish there was a better stats breakdown on the website, as well as player comparisons across the US....that would be cool to see, but probably way time consuming to put together for every player out there. I think I calculated if I lost my next two matches which would put me at 200 lifetime matches, that I would be at 80.5%...if I win them probably like 81.5% or something close...the site is down now for me so I can't check.

I am more excited about going for a 6 point 9 ball break tonight to be honest lol. Most likely I will hit it too hard and uncontrolled and get maybe 2....but we shall see! Good luck to everyone tonight.

like you said the site is down so i can't chesk stats either.

just going off memory we have about 8 s/l 7's in my sun night league. i may be biased but i think my team mate is the strongest one. he is the only 7/9. there are some that are 7/8 and the rest are 7/7's.

last time i checked my team mate has a 78% lifetime record and around 250 matches.

some times he just don't seem to be agressive when playing but other times he can turn it on.a few weeks back he was playing a 7/8 in 9 ball. my team mate beat him 18-2.

i said dang you put it on him tonight. he said yea... he went around bragging about beating me last time we played. he said lets see if goes around bragging about losing like he did.

i said beating you is something to something to brag about so don't take it so personal next time. we both laughed about that.

Got my ass handed to me in 9-ball tonight, 5-15... The lady I played is tough, we usually have good matches, she played well tonight. And I didn't...

No worries buddy, it happens. I was hoping for an earlier night (got home at 1230 in the morning last week)...got home at 12:15 this morning sigh. Our team plays sooo slow, specifically about 3 lower handicapped players which makes for long nights since they need to play often. One of them took an hour and about ten minutes for her 8 ball match as a 3 FFS. Every shot is dramatic, overthought etc....

Anyway....I didn't meet my 9 ball goal of a 6 point break. The tables seem like they may be fast, but after you shoot, the cue ball and object ball really slows down quick at this Irish bar. I did get a 3 point break, but that's it...I lost my 9 ball match right on schedule and am now 2-4 so I should be safe as a 7 for a while at least. 8 ball I didn't have any break and runs but I do have a rackless patch coming so this is 2 weeks in a row of rackless patches (10-0 winning the initial lag in each). That's pretty cool and not too easy of a feat to do considering I have to win both lags and all games. Maybe they will come out with a new patch for back to back rackless weeks or something like that :). I didn't shoot great, but got out every time I was supposed to and was playing for huge range of shape...but confident in my shot so it didn't matter if my shape wasn't perfect.

zzzzzzzzzzzz happy Friday zzzzzz, time to go back to bed, er back to work.

It doesn't happen often but when my slow guy plays another slow guy, I give them some time but after a while I will tell them both, "You guys have got to pick up the pace." And then they do, and they both play a tick better and everyone's happy.

As expected, my team dropped out of first place after our bye week. We're only 10 points out of first which has me kicking myself over a decision a few weeks ago. We rescheduled a match because the other team was only going to have one (out of 3) players. About 45 minutes before the rescheduled match, the LO calls me and says that they're only going to have two guys. Technically my player needs to be present to get the forfeit but the weather that night was complete crap: wet, constant snow making driving a pain. So I call the player that would drive the farthest and say don't come, you can have the forfeit. Sure enough, they have a third guy show up. Instead of us taking the forfeit, I just convince them that no one gets points for the third match. Now, I wish I had insisted that we get the forfeit because I called my guy away due to weather and they told me they were going to be a man down. (For the record, my guy would have won... this is a team of totally new pool players.) If we had taken the forfeit, we would be ahead by 10 points.

The bigger kick in the butt is that unless my "backup" guy can show up next week, we'll take a forfeit because I'm out of town and can't play.

If this was Masters or playoffs definitely...but a normal social night I don't want to piss in anyone's cheerios so we are pretty lenient on this. My wife has told one of the gals so she knows...she just needs to hear it repeatedly. I understand they are lower shots and it will take longer to win the games, but the time between shots is way too long. Still...not a huge issue.

I really only say something when things go to extremes. I remember watching a 4-4 or maybe 5-4 8-ball race that was taking an hour and a half. And these were better players too... I think in APA they are SL 5/6.

I have won apa race to 3 in 9 innings and had the same race take 40 innings with over 20 safes between the 2 of us. It really depends on the night and the people.

It's not about how long the match takes in terms of innings; it's how slow the people are playing. I would never tell anyone to stop playing safeties to get the game over and I would never tell anyone I had never seen before to play faster.

You get to know the people in your area and how well they can play and you can tell when those people are intentionally playing slow.

I was at the swannie 2 weeks ago watching the 2nd day. Best seats in the house, right in the middle. 2 different matches going on at the same time. White shirt guy and black shirt guy in one match, Ernesto Dominguez playing someone on the table next to them. White shirt/black shirt match..break 1st rack I get up to visit the mens room, stopped and watched the golf players and grabbed a burger. Get back to my seat they are still in the 1st rack. Few min. later both tables were racking for next game. Ernesto broke and ran the table BEFORE black shirt guy had the balls racked the way he wanted them. Slow play extends to all levels not just league play. Maybe we need a shot clock for league play :)

just got back from league. still kinda in shock right now gonna try to choose my words carefully.

when i got to league and grabbed my score sheets i saw 2 of my players were raised.

player a went from a 4 to a 6 in 8 ball and from a 3 to a 5 in 9 ball.

player b went from a 3 in both 8 and 9 to a 5 in both.

i went to the lo and asked what's up with that. he said he found out how good they really are this week end and that they both had been dumping. i said what do you mean ? he said player a was ranked a 6 in that tourny ...he did not say what player b was ranked. i asked how did they do ? di the get in the money ... go 2 and out or did you watch them ?

he said he just heard they were in it but did not know how they finished in it.

i told him my co captain picked these 2 guys up. and i was not aware of any dumping going on. i told him i did not know player b before he joined our team but i knew player a for about 6 years. i said you raised player a to a 6 and i know for a fact he is not any better than me and i am only a 5.

i said they both have are at least 50 % in 9 ball and they both are 2-1 in 8 ball ... how is that dumping. again he stated ....he heard they are better than their handicaps are.

like i said ... i been in shock and really did not know what to say to him other than what i have already typed.

as i am typing this it just dawned on me that it makes me look bad being the captain and him thinking i got 2 guys dumping .

i did not really go into it with my 2 players but did ask them how they did in that tourny. player a went 2-2. player b went 2 and out.

also it just came to me about this tourny. there is no rhyme or reason about some of the handicaps. i played in it a few times. when i was ranked a 3 and faced a 7/8 in it who was only ranked a 4 i quit playing in it.

this tourny is known to have some heavy hitters in it and my guys were just donating.

my lo and i play on the same team on tue night. i am gonna have to get my thoughts together and have a talk with him that night.

right now i am still a lil shocked by what went down. really cant field a team unless i play all my worst players.

oh yea .... i just played 8 ball in the 4th match knowing i could not stay under 23. i said fvck it . he can forfeit my team if he wants for having a handicap of 24 due to him raising 2 of my players by 4 points total.

i faced a 4 and won 4-1. played good cause i was pissed off.

Man, that sucks.

I'm all for players being raised to their appropriate skill level, but this sure doesn't appear to be the case.

I have a real difficult time with the LO saying "I heard"...if he didn't see evidence of it, why is he taking action?

Good luck.

Pretty weak of the LO to bump players 2 levels because of what he heard happened at a tournament where they apparently assign handicaps willy-nilly.

That's pretty crappy of the LO. "I heard" so and so plays pretty good, let's bump him 3 levels up!

Not so much league news, but is related to the above topic.
I played in my first Open tournament on Saturday. It was part of the Bayou State 9-ball Tour. There were a lot of good players there: Richie Richeson, Tre Baker, Little John Macias, and a good bit more. I won my first match against a guy named Erin or Aaron (I think he was a local player, I've never seen him before). It was race to 7, alt breaks, 9 doesn't count in the lower two. I beat him 7-3. The tournament started way too late, because they wanted to wait for Lil John and Joey A to show up. After my first match, I waited a good 1.5-2 hours to play again. They matched me up with a local guy Jacob Pennison. He won the flip and broke first. I could have won the first game and got out the next few, but I dogged so many shots it was pitiful. Got into the losers bracket and played my third match against a guy from Mississippi. Ended up hill/hill and his break. He broke bad and left me funny. I played a lock up safety on the 3 and knew I could win it. I got BIH, ran it out and dogged the 9... :(

Lots of room for improvement and it was a good experience. I'm not sure if I like the tournament scene. I need to get in a tournament that is run properly and on time to change my mind.

It was definitely great practice for our 9-ball matches on Wednesdays. Our LO would probably do the same thing if he found out I played in it and did as well as I did for an APA 5 lol.

Yeah see, this is the kinda shit that really irks me. Its one thing if the LO actually WATCHED them play but to hear if from someone else and react so subjectively to that is complete BS. I realize the the LO's must have the ability to adjust player handicaps outside of the mathematical formulas of the handicap system, but in this instance it is completely irresponsible of him to do this. Especially increasing them each by two skill levels sight-unseen. Clearly you need to address this. Possibly going over the LO's head if that is even possible.
