When I first joined this site, I thought it was really cool that I could talk about anything pool related with people that have vast and superior knowledge than myself. I knew I would learn so much from reading what everyone had to say on any subject matter, and when I felt I had something to add, that I could throw my $.02 in there as well. A couple of years went by and then I saw that there was a way to become a member. I wanted to support the site, so I joined. Got my cool little "Member" flag and off I went. I'll admit I felt slightly more important having the "Member" by my name, almost like what I had to say would be viewed as more important simply for being a member. Obviously, that is not the case, but that's how I felt! I can feel the judging going on right now!

Anyways, it's been over a year, and once again I'm just a guest. I will be a "member" again soon, but then I start to think. Regardless of if I'm a member or not, people can come on here, criticize and insult anyone and the worse that happens to them is that they get an earful from some of the old schooler's or are banned. Well, then they just create another screen name and it starts all over again. What can be done about these individuals to either make them calm down or just go away?

There are different ways that you can express your disagreement with what someone's opinion or viewpoint is on any given subject. Some people just automatically resort to being nasty and insulting. I don't know about anyone else, but the meaning of the thread becomes lost when someone starts insulting others. It takes the thread from its original meaning and turns it into an insult match. From there, some good opinions, answers and viewpoints get lost between all the insult posts. Hoping to get the views from the people that have a lot of experience and can actually answer and add important information to the thread is lost, because once the thread turns into an insult war, they just tune out the thread.

I'm tired of missing out on the experience of drawing knowledge from all that actually want to contribute to this wonderful forum. Old and young! Every one of us might have some different viewpoint that can sway someone's opinion from one direction to the other. It doesn't have to be in a bad way, and we can definitely agree to disagree.

Here's my solution. And this is where I turn into Tiger Woods and you all beat me over the head with a 5-iron!!

Charge a membership for anyone that actually wants to post, or send PM's!! You can still be a lurker for free. Read till your brain hurts, but if you want to be heard, you must become a paying member. The first time that someone becomes insulting to a personal level, and is either reported or caught by one of the moderators, than they get banned for a year! Then they have to pay to become a member and be heard again! Trust me, in time they will either change their ways, or just quit coming on here all together.

There are a ton of people on here that have valuable knowledge to share, but will not do so because they fear they will be attacked with insults. I personally want to hear from them and anybody else that has something constructive to say. I have no problem debating with anyone either, just as long as it's kept civil. No need for obscenities or personal insults.

Thanks for letting me get this off my chest, and if this has been said before on another thread, I apologize for the repeat. I know this is not "Pool Related" but I feel it is related to the complete site.

This won't happen because you will lose a lot of traffic from the people who want to post and will go somewhere else that is free. I can maybe see for the people wanting to sell an item that they need to pay a small fee ala Ebay, but not just regular posters. They can do IP address checks, but can't block IP addresses on here. Your best solution is to put the posters on ignore that you don't want to read their posts daily.

I wasn't thinking that it would actually be done. It was more of a hoping thing.

I can put people on "Ignore" but as soon as someone quotes them, then I get to see the negativity they normally spew out!

I just reached a point where I was fed up with all the keyboard tough guys that roam this site, itching to start a war of words.

I guess I was hoping that this little verbal tirade that I put out there, would reach the ears of those individuals that spread this negativity to our site, and somehow it would awaken that inner kind person that is so dying to come out!

A man can dream of change...can't he?

You've been here for 3.5 years and survived and in a few more years you will become numb to the flame wars...sit back and relax. Why don't you try AZ NPR or better yet go to BD NPR and come back to paradise.

Yeah, you gotta be kinds thick skinned sometime. I just read the posts, take what I need, and leave the rest. If someone doesn't agree with what I say, that is fine, as they are entitled to their views/opinions but I sure don't lose any sleep over it. Some just try to stir up crap, and if that is what makes em happy, fine with me.

This is very sound advice! Spending some time [exclusively] in NPR will definitely callous you, and when you come back here, you'll be like, "Feh! Ain't no thing!"

I go to the AZ NPR, but not for long! 95% of all the posts in there are all about politics and I've been smart to stay out of those and keep my opinions to myself! Those people are vicious in there!

I just got fed up with people verbally assaulting others for posing a simple question, or making a simple statement. Like you said, I have been here for over 3 years and I finally just had enough!

I vented and got it out of my system, and now it's time to go back to normal. Kill them with kindness!

Appreciate everyone taking the time to read an old man's whining and the good advice.

let's see, you have to pay before you have a voice. This sounds at its best elitest, and at its worst undemocratic. Leave it like it is: warts and all.

Hey Bro, I have thrown out the same idea before and have learned very quickly that it would never happen.

What I don't understand in todays level of technology is why the trolls can't be kept at bay.

Anyways, its time to head home and have a beer!!

Have a good one :)

I'm glad the Forum is free. It encourages us to participate. If I pay to be a member of something ...I do it to support the cause....to keep it going....to help a Forum/Site owner pay the bills.
Being a member has no rank. We compare notes with a lot of nice people and a handful of %$#*&^%$#@'s.

Anyway have fun here. Learn what you can. Say whatever is on you mind and enjoy the ride. It's all about fun and a place to hang out. Don't take it too seriously. Especially internet forums. Life is too serious to take seriously.

With young kids coming on this site, and having raised two daughters, I equally wonder why a Billiard site has soooooooo many female pics in provocative positions, what's that got to do with our game, but I ignore unless its too much, then I say something and get flamed, but I don't care because there are others who feel the same way. I too wonder why male posters feel the need to have female avatars, why not just post a pic of yourself. There's allot of dysfunction on this site parallelling what you see in the Honky Tonk bars around the US. If it was a perfect world, I wouldn't like that.

I have brought this up before here and one pocket.org. If somehow denigrating women by posting near provocative photos is your idea of class, then I skip anything you have to say. It just so happens that I have a lot of respect for women and my wife. This isn't a porn site. I wonder how many of these men put posters of this type at their mothers house. Show some class, even if you don't have any.
Is this the type of thread you want to talk about today?

Buy the OP a case of scotch!!!!

With exception to having to purchase something to submit my opinions and perhaps be a contributor to some extent of my own knowledge, what I have learned over the years, etc. all in an effort to just share these things with a "community"; I am in total agreement with the OP here.

I've been lurking on the forums for quite some time and a couple of weeks ago, I felt brazen enough to join. Perhpas that could have been a wrong move on my part but if it is, then that's on me for being naive enough to think that someone new could be welcomed to the forum.

Knowing that the possibility of becoming embattled with people who do not know me nor take the time to care to get to know me, I remain extremely reluctant to post anything at all or offer any type of contributions.

Granted, I have done a couple of postings with knowledge that more than likely, there will be at least one person that will find any excuse just to start a battle with me because they have so much tunnel vision that they are unwilliing to accept the fact that what works for me, may not work in their own game and vice versa. Just because my opinions may differ does not make me the village idiot. It means that with all of us here, we provide a diverse background that could be peaceful yet those who start their flame wars do nothing more than add adversity that often leads to turmoil and chaos.

I will remain reticent to be a contributor altogether and spend the majority of time lurking as the last thing I want is to get banned because I have upset some member who has 100,000 postings and then their little cliques also jump on the band wagon and then it turns out to be a 1 against 100 type of word war that I have neither the time nor the inclination to continue to pursue and will not provide them with that satisfaction.

I think this is the stupidest post in the history of AZ!!! You will force the majority of people off the site, and many people with brilliant minds for the game who can't afford to be a member will be kept from providing feedback that might improve the game for everyone! Also, the rich idiots could still pay for and receive membership so it would improve nothing, only a reduction in posts and sharing of information!!!!

Just busting your chops. I wish there would be a way as well, but I don't think charging for members would really solve the problem. I too have grown callous and simply ignore the ranting posts. :D:D

Consider my chops busted!

If you are truly on this site for the right reasons, then you wouldn't mind paying for it. It's a way to support the site, but also keep out the individuals that only come on here to stir up trouble. I know that we would lose members that contribute good information to the forums, but I would hope not. I would hope that with being able to ban the individuals that like to start trouble, that in turn we would gain positive contributors that have kept quiet and only lurked for years because they were tentative to say anything.

Maybe that's the reason why a lot of the pro's hesitate on posting here. They don't want to get into any heated debates with any of the bad seeds, in order to protect their reputation.

I'm not trying to force anyone into sharing my point of view. I was just sharing an idea for improving the site during a time of frustration.
