This is mainly for people who live in the states. Does it bother you that pool in this country is in the state of where it is? Or do you think it's just a bunch of people in this forum making it out to be as bad as it is?

If you do not like where it is, what would you want to be seen done to try to fix it?

The "state" of pool? Bother me?

Not really.

I would like to see it a little more popular...but I am not really so bothered by it.

I have my cues and can go play any time I like. And I have two or three people I enjoy playing with. That's just fine with me.

As for all the "noise" in the forum recently. I glanced at it. But I play pool, and collect cues. I am not really a spectator. So I am not so bothered by all that.

I'm in Southbend/Mishawaka Indiana - big area/lots of people(for the weekend) and you have to drive an hour to play on a 9' table. So yes, sad state for pool to be in and its not gonna get better

I wish pool leagues would disappear. I hate handicapped leagues and handicapped tournaments. And if someone wants to gamble the first thing they ask for is a damn spot.

Pool in America has an entirely different mentality than in Europe & Asia. Overseas, it is a game of competition; here In the USA it appears nothing more than a way to swindle someone out of their cash.

What bothers me is that in several pool rooms I visit; there are Europeans and Asians that take the game very seriously while Americans are in there banging balls around.

Any decent European/Asian here in the states that is worth their salt will keep any A-speed to shortstop busy on a table. Heck,if they get lucky, the American might even win!

The Pool Problem

This is mainly for people who live in the states. Does it bother you that pool in this country is in the state of where it is? Or do you think it's just a bunch of people in this forum making it out to be as bad as it is?

Pool is where it is for a lot of reasons and in the South has developed a severe demographic problem. Most of the people in this area that play leagues dont care to get better because that means they would have to practice and that costs money they dont have.

Its sad but true. The bar and kitchen makes much more money than the tables. When a nice place comes in unless they locate in a place with significant foot traffic and eyeball appeal its just a matter of time before you hear of them closing.

I miss having a place that care enough to want to develop some pool culture so that there is someone around to play. The owners of most places dont care to market pool as part of their businesses because its a draw that doesnt make them money.

I enjoy playing someone for 3 to 5 hrs I dont play leagues, I love competition and am starting to get out and hit a tournament now and then but dont care for them really.

If I had enough friends that had tables Id go to their homes and never walk into another pool room and wouldnt miss it because around here theres really no one there anyway.

When the economy is better and people have a little expendable money, you will see them again. That may never happen except in the urban areas.

I love living on a rural road that goes nowhere. So, I don't mind my weekly 80 miles drives to play on a 9' table one bit. Guess the current state is okay by me...but Cindy & I are just recreational bangers...play for the simple enjoyment and light exercise the game offers.

The only real problems with pool are related to the pro level and don't effect the average joe player.

That being said, I think we'd all like to see a solid pro tour.

Greetings from La Porte brother. We actually just had a little bar/darts/pool room open up here in LP right on linconlway. It's called Wit's End. Not really big but it has a few 7s an 8 and an 9. I've only been in there a couple times but apparently they're looking to put a little league together.

I agree with a lot of what you wrote:

I have many fond memories of the hours upon hours dad and friends would play and play, then play some more. Stories,... beer drinking,...trick-shot competitions, then more game play.

What you say about southern league players apply here in rural up-state NY as well. People get better, but it is the minority as most fall to your description.

I would love to open up a "members only" kind of room here, but there is no foot traffic for regular business let alone a private "rec room."

I may have been a bit tough in my prior post, but again that is what I see.

Not all leagues are handicapped.

Dallas has many great leagues to choose from.

What's really sad is that there are people out there, at this very moment, hitting balls, and they have never even heard of one pocket.

I agree, Mr.Bond. I liked it a lot when the Camel Pro Tour existed, and for us on the West Coast, the Sands Regency Pro Tournaments. I even liked the IPT for as long as it lasted. For all else, the "state of pool" can be what it is.
The game of pool will live on.

There is plenty of reasons for the downward slide in pool since the 1960's, but to me the biggest F/U was the dumping by Buddy and crew that stopped all casino betting on pool before it got started. That could have been good for pool. Johnnyt
