Alex Honnold: Man with the biggest Balls - 03-02-2019, 07:45 PM

Alex is apparently the world's greatest free solo climber. Free solo basically means he climbs without ropes or tools. There have been a few documentaries about him, and the most recent "Free Solo" just won an Oscar for best documentary.

In that film he becomes the first person to ever free solo El Capitan. A 3,000 ft wall in Yosemite. It airs tomorrow night at 9pm on National Geographic.

Here's a clip of him free soloing a 1,500 ft wall https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SR1jwwagtaQ The climb itself starts around the 8:50 mark.

Beyond scary. I was very anxious watching this.

This side of the human spirit is impressive, but so so risky. I think a guy like Chuck Yeager had some of this same thing.

That was wild. I hope he retires early. Become a motivational speaker, give lessons, get some sponsors, or something,,, but eventually the odds are against him.

He did a TED talk. That video I linked was from 2011 and the documentary of him climbing that 3,000' wall is from last year. So he's done a good job of defying the odds so far.

I do worry it will bust him, eventually.

Amazing what some folks are capable of.
The only thing that seems more crazy about what he's doing is the implausibility of it.
Yet, there he is doing it.

He says he doesn't view what he does as high risk.

He views it as high consequence.

He feels more at risk driving his van on the highway.

I bought the movie "Free Solo" in 4K several weeks ago. I've watched the climb a few times, and it makes me anxious every time. I can't even imagine . . . .

Yep, it's like bluffing in poker... going all is a strong move early, and rarely get callers at the beginning of a tournament. It works every single time, until the last time.
As good as the odds on a slot machine are, even the tightest ones in the most hidden, dishonest casino in Vegas may approach 99.5% in favor of the house... but eventually i'ts going to hit and have to pay off. I don't want the Casino cashing him in early, so probably wise to eventually give it up. Like the guy said at the beginning, half the the guys that free climb are all dead.

He's good, appears to be the best in the world. And I suspect he won't make the mistake that costs him but the mountain will. A little unseen dampness, a rock or crack that just don't not hold. Not really think it's worth putting your life on the line to enjoy a hobby, I just hope he's making some coin off this.

Obviously a lot of this is mental (confidence, and seeing the climbing pathway, knowing leverage techniques, etc.), but he must have insane hand strength and muscle endurance, also.

I haven't seen enough to tell if he is jacked. But he may just be one of those wiry strong guys. Very much stronger from what he looks like. Like the knockout power of Tommy 'the Hitman' Hearns.

I remember seeing this when it originally aired. I just did not think he would still be with us today. I am so glad I was wrong. He is one in a million. Not so much because he can climb, but because he freely puts it all out there with no "real" plan b.

Remember this guy in the photo?...... everyone figured someday a croc would get him..... but then it wasn't a croc at all.... something else when he was out of his element.... the natural elements like wind, seismic events, rain, snow, or even a a medical condition onset....etc, that he cannot control will likely lead to his inevitable "downfall" somewhere, sometime.if he continues.... He probably wouldn't have it any other way.
