Dire straits "sultans of swing" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0fAQhSRLQnM

And my favorite remake by Leo Moracchioli, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0RV0kgdqJU

the first one I thought of was "On Broadway"... original by the Crystals, then the Drifters and then the best version by George Benson... George's was by far the best imo although it has been done by a lot of big names

this is his original album version ('78) which is not his best version imo.... the older he got, the better his versions got imo

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ok__l1Acuwg

______________

the other song I thought of was The Sound of Silence... original by Simon & Garfunkel... this is the remake by Disturbed... strong strong

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9Dg-g7t2l4

George Benson is a great one (as is the cover you mention).

I especially like when he scat sings the lead guitar line. But the whole thing is fine work.

Back in the day, Creed Taylor had a lot of the greats under contract, and they toured a few years as the CTI All Stars. All of them were leaders on their own albums, but sat in as the session cats on each others albums. Quite the all-star lineup. Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Lenny White on drums, George on guitar, Hubert Laws on flute, and more:

Quote:
Its first album was A Day in the Life by guitarist Wes Montgomery in 1967 Its roster included George Benson, Ron Carter, Eumir Deodato, Astrud Gilberto, Freddie Hubbard, Bob James, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Hubert Laws, Stanley Turrentine, and Walter Wanderley.

One ultimate measure of a cover version is when the original artist starts playing it the way the cover artist did.

That was the case with Dylan's All Along the Watchtower and the Hendrix version, which may be the most spectacular re-imagined cover ever. Hendrix loved Dylan, and in one of the documentaries, his old girlfriend related how they got thrown out of an apartment because he played Dylan over and over at full blast.

An example of how the original artist did NOT go the way of a fine cover is JJ Cale's Call Me The Breeze. Lynyrd Skynyrd's rock rave up cover was fine, but JJ's Tulsa sound low key shuffle always appealed to me more. He later revisited his own style of the song in a re-make with Clapton (and friends) "The Breeze An Appreciation of JJ Cale."

Wait, I see now he didn't, not in that one at least. He's not on that recording. The closeness to his voice and the homage to his playing style tricked me all this time. Here he is with Slow Hand live on that tune, though.
