The European Three Cushion Championship is an annual billiards tournament, which was held in the Efteling in the Netherlands from 7 to 11 March 1962 . Location was the Café-Restaurant .

The annual (now biennial) organization is done by the European association CEB, which that year awarded the competition to the Dutch KNBB, which had asked the district of Groningen to organize a few things. When no suitable accommodation was found there, the modest district of Kaatsheuvel (95% of the members were factory workers) offered to take over the organization. It was seen by the municipality as a prestigious project; Efteling was prepared to host the competition and local businesses were recruited for support. [1]

Responsible from Efteling and chairman of the organizing committee was director Ab Diender , the competition secretariat consisted of his co-director Joop Salet , with support from Riet Tuerlings , and W. Soeterbeek from the billiards district. The first meeting of the Executive Committee took place on December 28, 1961 in the Café-Restaurant . [1]

Anton Pieck designed a poster with Tom Thumb with a billiard cue and caption “Land of Shoes - Fairytale Land”, the seven-league boots and caption both referring to the local shoe industry that supported the event.

The match was held in the Panorama Room of the Café-Restaurant, in which two billiards were placed centrally and wooden stands were built on either side for the spectators.

The finals were broadcast live on TV in the Netherlands and Belgium. The race was won by Belgian Raymond Ceulemans, his first European championship, and the start of a series that would grow to an absolute record of 23 European championships in the years that followed. Second was the defending champion, the Austrian Johann Scherz and the bronze went to Herman Popeijus from the Netherlands. [2]
