hola cuemakers
not sure I've ever posted here before
thanks in advance for putting up with me ^_^

I've dug into some old micarta threads
and read about how players like the hit/feel of it
and how micarta stays clean from chalk
but would like to try and understand why
and I'm curious about micarta's technical properties
and compared to other ferrule materials
i.e. things like weight, density, hardness, etc.
thanks again

The Mason micarta is not linen reinforced and neither was the the old stuff used on pool cues. Other than that the information in the article is great.

MM is linen enforced but had epoxy not phenolic resin.
And no longer available .
Skynet stopped making them.
I just tried getting 45 feet.

The last version was greenish and the linen is more pronounced.

The Westinghouse kind is super rare these days.
These are the best paper based micarta I've found.
Very light and will not break if you robogrip them reasonably.
To find the best ones from good rods , you'd have about 70% rejects. Have fun in finding them.

Joey is right about Mason Micarta. I have sold it for years and could not see the weave. (Old eyes I guess). But I looked at it under a magnifying glass this week and it indeed does have a very fine weave. The Old yellow stuff Schon and others used decades ago did not have a weave. I like the hit and sound of the Mason Micarta better than the old stuff. But the old stuff had a more consistent look and turned darker with age..
