Actually it happened today. I played a local tourney and my first match was against Earl Strickland. He broke and didn't pot a ball. I ran 4 balls and scratched. After the match was over, as I was sitting licking my wounds from losing 5-0, Earl comes over and says "Wow, it should have been closer" and shakes my hand. I am a lowly ranked C player and I felt like a million dollars. He may come off badly sometimes but he most def represented the game in my eyes as least as a class act. Thanks Earl, I'll try harder next time.

I will try to make this short. Me and my best friend are going out on a Friday and we always went to this local bar to play pool and get a few extra bucks. They played for 2 dollars a game, just got off work, we're talking 5 in the afternoon. Not much action this day. Best friend playing but no other action. This teenager comes over and says sir, would you like to play for 2 dollars and I said sure. I know he's not old enough to even be in here. We play back and forth for a couple hours and break even. I was very impressed with his play and ask him his age, name and we talked. Me and my best friend leave and he just cannot believe I didn't beat this kid. I told him if this kid keeps playing and some girl don't sweep him off his feet he will be a great player. We still talk about that afternoon to this day. I played with him off and on for the next 2 or 3 years but not for 2 dollars. His name was Stevie Moore or as I call him Little Stevie.

That's a great story! I was lucky enough to meet Stevie in Tunica this past July. Seemed like a really good guy. I had a front row seat to his match against Johnny on the 10 footer. While it was a heartbreaker for Stevie I thought he played extremely well and showed tons of heart.

It was 1994...

It was a Friday night in 1994. I was at Chattanooga Billiard Club just hitting some balls and throwing back some beers with friends. It was somewhat crowded, which was the norm back then. This guy came in and started hitting balls by himself on the 9 footer next to us. I noticed he was left handed and rarely missed. He didn't ask any of us to play and I certainly didn't ask him! The next day I went back fairly early. At that time there was always action during the day. After awhile the guy from the night before came in with a buddy. I told my opponent not to play because neither of us could win. Sure enough, a few minutes later he came over and asked if either of us wanted to play him or his buddy. We politely declined but told him to be patient and action would arrive. It wasn't long until he and his buddy were taking down all of Chattanooga's best. By the way, his name was Anthony Phillips and his buddy, Jeremy Jones.

It was called the 10k tour where the results are still there.
I had to play Dennis Hatch in the finals and the race was 10 -7
The event had 90+players with some good cash for the money.
I remember the TD and I were buddy's at the time and there were
some top notch players in the event.Well I only wen for $40 in the
Calcutta but I know if I get hot I've beaten alot of guys.

Dennis was destroying the field and put me on the Bside.
I went through the Bside and met him back in the finals were I had
to beat him twice.

First set went hill-hill down to a do or die shot for me.The 8and 9
were stuck together on the back rail and I had a table length draw
shot on the seven to hopefully drawback into the 8and 9 and get shape.

Well,it worked and I got out(thank god).I went back to Willy the TD
and told him"I'm gonna win this,I feel to good''.I remember Willy saying
''stay focusd and play smart''.

Dennis came back to the poolroom after his smoke and started getting
ready for our last and final set.
Well,Dennis came out of the blocks like a Monster.I kinda started feeling
like Peter McNeely when he fought Mike Tyson.
Half way through the set he slowed down a bit and I suddenly caught
that gear again.
I ended up taking control of the set and pulling out the victory.
Dennis was a cool cat and we did a shot after the match, which I
needed along with a mild sedative.

I've won events since then but that for me was the most memorable
event I've ever had to date.Takecare Scott

My stories are pretty weak in comparison to Measureman's, but they're all I've got!

I've got a history of going to the coast for the regional BCA/APA events and playing like a dog. Last fall, thinking that I'd be a shoe-in for placing well in the B tournament, I make the 2 or 3 hour drive out there the night before and stop by the casino to maybe hit a few balls and meet up with some friends. I immediately jumped into a mini-tournament and took it down. At that point, I was feeling as though I was finally going to do well in one of these damn tournaments on the little diamonds.

Wrong. I go 2-and-out. The last game came down to a complete fluke of a leave by my opponent, which left me on one side of the side pocket, blocked by the 9, having to hit the 8 that was on the other side of the pocket. Yeah, didn't happen. Boy was I bummed and we still had another day and a half of waiting until the team event!

So I do what any bored and bummed player would do. I find an A that I know and play a couple of 9 sets for $20 each. Bad idea. I still stunk it up and he played pretty solid as usual. Ok, now I'm 2-and-out, have a ways to wait, burning vacation time and now I'm starting to lose what little money I had.

Back to the rental house to unwind for a few.

Knowing that I have to get myself playing well on the diamonds, I head back. I find the guy I was playing and he asks if I want to go again. I say, "Ok, but let's play 8." I split sets with him, but can tell I'm shooting better. After a little bit, we play another 9b set - I win. He says, "Play my friend." I say, "How good is he?" His reply.. "You can beat him." Ok.. race to 4 8b for $20.

His first shot, he lines up at the base of the ball and has a smooth stroke.. damn, I'm in trouble. He fails his runout at the end, I end up playing defensive and win. He gets me the next game. He breaks and flies the CB. I run out and follow with a BNR. He fights back and ties it up at 3. He asks, "2 ahead?" I agree. Shooting well and playing lock-up D, I get the next 2. When I tell him I just went 2-and-out in the B, he calls me "grandmaster B". He got 4th in the last master event and just lost a short race to 5 to a B that went 2-and-out.

Feeling good, I get into a short-rack bank game with a youngster that had just taken 2nd in the last master event. I ask him for 7-3. "I may as well just give you my money." 6-4? "Ok, 6-4." 2 out of 3 for $40. I took it quick, something like 4-2 and 4-3. I gave up my spot(I gotta stop doing that). I was making great 2-rail shots, twist banks and sharp straight-backs, but couldn't get the "easy" side banks or short corner banks down. He asked if I was holding back. I ended up losing on the hill, but it sure did feel good to be asked if I was stalling by somebody that shoots that well. The only problem was, everybody that ended up watching got the wrong idea of my game. :embarrassed2:

My B team did end up getting into the money, but I followed up my performance in singles by barely getting my money back the next time. Perhaps I'll finally get over that hump in October. With any luck, I'll have another story afterwards. And if you know anybody there that'll play some cheap bank pool, let me know. ;)

I was playing in a small pool room almost every day and there were some excellent young players, and a hard as the street old timer that never made a bad game.
Just when I thought I knew his speed, he would have to come off the stall a bit, and show something I didn't expect, to beat whoever he was playing.
I had seen him play 9 ball, one pocket, and some on the snooker table and I had heard he was a very good 3 cushion billiard player.
We were talking one day, and I finally asked him what his best game was.
With zero hesitation he said "The Broads"

I'll play.

The story of how a marine saved my life.

I had moved back to my hometown to finish college after spending a couple of years away. During the time away I pretty much stopped playing pool, concentrating on competitive foosball instead.

First week of the semester, I started hanging out with a friend who was teaching billiards at the university. I was literally just effing around if I picked up a cue, so my friend used me to demonstrate what not to do so he could always be the guy who did things correctly.

In his earliest class, there was a 5'10" blonde who started asking me to play with her before, during and after class. That turned into hanging out almost all the time, skipping class to drive a hundred miles to play pool in a dank bar with her uncle, etc..

One day we were playing and I was having a particularly good day, making it look easy. I was never one to downplay my skills or pander to someone, so she wasn't winning at all.

So, the last game we ever played together, I broke and ran down to the eight, giving myself nice shape. She had been standing at one corner of the table glaring at me the entire run. Turns out that I needed to shoot the eight from right where she was standing. I walk over, smile at her--for which I received the iciest glare I've seen. She makes it clear that she has no intention of moving, so I put my arms around her, bridging and stroking with her in my arms. I sink the eight and she walks out.

About a week later I found out that she slept with a marine. She ended up following him to Cali.

Best damn thing the marines ever did for me.

Thanks for sharing with us.

About 15 years ago I decided i was going to check out Chicago Billiards in New Haven CT. Got there pretty late at night played some kids 1 handed 8 ball and made a 10/20 bucks. So there is this kid there skinny as a rail, slicked down jet black hair Playing by himself now I came to this Mecca of pool for some action. So what the Hell I was playing solid B level pool at the time, figured I was a lock this kid ain't going to beat me.

We play 5 ahead sets for like 200...I win a set , he wins a set. Finally he gets ahead about 4 sets and I call it quits. I leave figuring I will never see the kid again.

Well turns out I was wrong about a year or two goes by.. I was warming up for a Joss tour event and I look up and who do I see none other than this kid.. So I ask around who is this guy...Turns out he is Billy the Kid Lanna.

Funny part is when I see him now and then around the area he always remembers me hard to forget easy money I guess:D

Back in the late '60 and early 70's I was driving truck, hauling wide boats , up and down the west coast , lots of river patrol boats and landing barges headed to Viet Nam . I had to stop at dusk and couldn't move again till day light and in some places I could not move till 9 am . i had it planed where i could stop and shoot pool everynight . our tuminal was in N.Hollywood , on Lancersum , my spelling sucks . I had a route I used everytime I was there . I started at the bar next to the bowling ally , and then I had 3 other places I would hit , and if everything went well I would wind up at the Jumpin Jack , I think on Victory Blvd . This one night at the little bar next to the bowling ally I got a 8 ball break 3 times in a row . The bar gave a pitcher of beer with a 8 ball break , which I gave to the looser , I didn't drink while playing pool . They strted complaining about not getting to shoot , so I pack it up and went straight to the jumpin jack and lost my ass . O for the good old days . Jim
