fellas i think i am getting burnt out on pool.

i had my choice of whether to go to apa travel or in house money league tonight. i just stayed home.

the last few weeks i have found myself getting lax at the table. lost last wed napa league to a guy who should never beat me.

won sat napa league but i was down 2-0 and got ticked off cause i was playing bad and won the next 4 in a row winning 4-2 in a 4-4 race.

sun night double jeapordy. lost my 9 ball match 25-23 to a 3. got ticked off about that and won my 8 ball 4-1 in a 4-4 race.

i never practice on my home table and although i have any where from 1 to 2 hours free practice in most of my leagues i never get there early enough to practice. when i do get there i just watch every one else practicing until it is time for matches to start.

i have cut back on teams i play on this last year. guess i need to cut back a few more.

I'm feeling burnt out and I only play one night a week! My team has a bye this week and my girlfriend asked if I was going to miss playing. My response was "miss it?... nah..."

TBD... I may head up to Turning Stone this weekend to watch how the pros do it (and to lose 20 bucks in the video poker machine.)

I played for the first time in the Valley league here last night after deciding not to play APA this session. I went 5 for 5 so I played well, but even if I didn't I LOVE it. The format and rules are great, the matches move fast so we were done around 10, and I like my team. There is no going back.

I love playing pool, but boy do you play a lot

I think by only have a few league nights, you look forward to them more. At least that is what I suspect is going on here.

Of course, I'd like to have the opportunity to test that theory, but I'll stick with my two league nights a week for now

I agree with this. I've made the decision that I can only commit to one league at a time. The rest of the time I spend playing pool I play with friends or practice to try to get better for league. Playing 3 to 5 league nights a week would start to seem like work IMO.

Yep, time to cut back a bit more. Try and change to just one league night a week. It'll help remind you why you play - for fun. I like playing, too, but when I get overextended, I get a bit burnt out. That's why I like to go to league nights, but not necessarily be on the team. I can play all I want, hang out with my friends, yet still not feel like I have to be dedicated to so many nights a week. Right now, I've got a BCA night and a part-time APA day. I'm probably out another 3 nights a week, but it's because I want to be.

..and back to our regularly scheduled program..

I sat out last Thursday for BCA so that another person could sign up and get in on it. We should have enough room this week that it won't be an issue. Sunday, we had a player call in, so I couldn't play 9b, but I got another W in 8b. I think I need to have a little more focused practice again, because I feel as though I'm getting sloppy.

Last night was 10 Ball at my Mega Bucks League. As I'm just a three I played a 7 so in a race to 11 I got a handicap of 5 games and the 8 and out. With the 8 and out how could I lose? Just look for combinations with the 8, 9, and 10!!! So I won easily.

This and a recent blogpost by akaTrigger here makes me ask a question...

For the people who play rotation games in leagues but are NOT in APA (and the reason I specify that will become relevant shortly), do you or your teammates go for a lot of combination shots?

I see it frequently in my NAPA league and I think this is one area where the league structure encourages a bad habit. Namely that short races in rotation games means players go for low-percentage combinations more than they should.

I really try to avoid combinations as much as possible. My personal opinion is that unless the second ball is hanging, I'm wasting my inning by going for a combination.

Thoughts?

How I feel when my teammate goes for a combation with ball-in-hand:

How I feel when my opponent does it:

Oh, and the reason I excluded APA (if it isn't obvious) is that in APA 9-ball, there's no real reason to go for low-percentage combinations on the 9.

That's one reason I think APA 9-ball is structured like it, too many beginners (and yes, bangers) would be taking flyers on the 9 all the time

My APA 9-ball story from last night....

Summer session championship match. We're down 22-18 after the first two matches, and the two matches to follow me weren't likely to be in our favor, so I needed to win to give us a decent chance.

I'm matched up against another sl5, a good player who always plays me tough. We're probably close to even over the years, give or take a little, and its always enjoyable to play him. He's tough...

We're moving along in the match, I can't seem to get a good run but am managing to stay close. I get a layout that looks promising, get the one and shape on the two in the side. If I play it naturally I should get decent shape on the three and it looked good from there.

So what did I do? I rattled the two in the side pocket. Who does that? Somehow I did. My jaw dropped. It wasn't a hanger but close to it.

Of course my opponent makes the most of that mistake, and eventually I end up losing 14-6. Ouch.

To their credit, our pair of sl3's remaining gave the sl4's they were matched up against all they could handle, but we end up losing the match. Second place, first losers....sigh.

I needed to win mine to make it happen, and dropped the ball. I'll be seeing that two ball in my mind for a long time, methinks

I used to do this but I have gotten better at forgetting things like this. You can't hold onto it or else it will effect your future play.

We have playoffs this weekend for 8 and 9 ball to go to try to qualify for tri cup. We play tonight and then again at 7 in the morning sigh...going to be a looooong weekend potentially lol. Oh well, we will see what happens.

Justadub shake it off brother we all lose.

Here's my favorite jordan quote.

I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.
