I found a floor polisher pad for the base.
Considering it's intended to see heavy rotation use; I think its going to serve better than any form of carpet.

Very cool, and a nice design. The turn table with the ball cylinders, 18"?
and do you just dump a little liquid polish on each ball, or a couple pumps of Windex?
after having used it, would you have considered anything besides carpet for lining?
