Does a Schon hit like a McDaniel? - 10-01-2012, 07:06 AM

I'm looking to buy a Schon, I already have a McDaniel and i just wanted some input. How does a McDaniel hit compared to a Schon? How are the cues similar and how are they different?

Playing Cue: Schon STL1 Tulipwood, Joss, BMC Candy Apple Red, and Predator SP
Case: Instroke Buffalo Leather 2X2

I cannot play with a Schon. I would rather play with a broom stick. The McDaniel taper is not even close to a Schon. Completely different hit. The taper on a Schon is 4 inches shorter, creating a much stiffer hit and a lot more deflection. The McDaniel is a 12 inch pro taper. If you wan't a shaft that plays a lot like a McDaniel use the McDermott I-2 shaft, it is the closest thing out there.

I couldn't disagree more. Every McDaniel i have owned has been stiffer than any Schon I have owned. They aren't really comparable IMO

Give me a McDaniel anyday over a Schon

The shorter the taper the stiffer the hit. According to the Blue Book of Pool Cues, Schon Cues have an 8-10 inch taper. Mcdaniel Cues have a 12 inch pro taper. Of course some of the older McDaniel cues had a different taper. They also had a longer steal joint than the newer models. The newer or more recent cues were developed by Bill through collaboration with Nick Varner and Ginky. They have been regarded as some of the best playing cues on the planet.

I already know that but taper isn't the only factor. I have only owned 7 McDaniel's and I realize that isn't very many but they were all stiff except one Mac Attack that someone had spun down to about 12mm. Bill's shaft wood seems denser or just higher quality to me. I will buy another one someday.

i havent played with a mcdaniel yet but if it plays like an I2 shaft it has more deflection than every schon i tried out the I2 is a catastrophy imho, the I3 or the G core shaft are much much better playing shafts.

btw: woodquality owns taper if you dont push it to an extreme
