Pilot size?

Hello Guys,
I got this photo from the cue owner.
No disrespect to him, He just took the photo of the cue.

5/16" Piloted Threaded Brass Insert.
Industry standard at .500 inches diameter.

5.3 mm = .208 inches?
Is the batteries in his calipers low on charge?
Needed to zero set the calipers?
Never seen this before.

My guess would be an inadvertent hitting of the zero button at some point. Weak batteries usually present with a fading display well before effecting measurement.

I'd suggest he do it again, and use the calibers perpendicular to the insert so he's measuring with the meat of the jaws. This will also ensure he is reading the full OD.

Who said there was an Industry standard???
There isn't one. Schons are approx. .528. There's others as much as .550

Just because most inserts have a large lip diameter of .500 does not mean the final pilot will be .500. As many use the wood or phenolic under the brass lip to create the exact size pilot they want.

Pilot

Guys,
I am making his Cue Caps.
I just asking the owner for the Pilot Diameter.

I am not asking why is the pilot of the cue is not .500" ( or any other size)
I need to be sure the cue cap shaft's pilot is slightly larger than his cue's shaft's pilot.

I need to know his Pilot diameter, so, if I got to turn down the pilot to below .500",or, the Butt side Cap will not fit.

I am not questioning the pilot diameter choice.

I was asking..
how did the caliper measure 5.3 mm on a 1/2 diameter?
That's all. :p

JV. I was thinking the same thing.
That yellow button.
Chris, Yes, I know that. You might have misunderstood the post. Thanks for posting.
Dave, yes, I understand. but, to be that way off size.
I was just fortunate he had Calipers.

Hi Alton....That's why I said "could be" a factor. Yes, there could be a few other factors also. Ask your guy to close the calipers reset to zero then lay them flat on the end of the shaft face to measure the pilot. They will no doubt get a more accurate reading.

Pilot Size

1st. :)
Micheal, sorry for the unnecessary, degrading, and disrespectful comment.
You are very knowledgeable... :)
Guys, sorry to say that to Micheal and, in front of you guys.
Mario, :)
My fault.

Yea, Dave, :)
I should have mentioned that to him.
I think I going be O.K. on the Butt Insert side.
It's the shaft cap's counter bore I worry about.
I'm not trying for a compression fit, but, I do not want it to be too big.

I had to progress the Caps.
I do not glue in the JP screws. Waiting for his reply. :)

Alton :)

Asking customers to measure stuff them selves is almost always problematic. I have had to give step by step instructions for the customer to do the most basic measurements. If your unsure give the customer details instructions on how to measure the diameter of the pilot. It's in the customers own Interests to give a precise measurement.

What happens on cheaper calipers is that the action of opening/closing may turn on/off the caliper. Sometimes that will re-zero mid slid. Even if they re-zero’s the caliper, there’s no saying they’re paying close enough attention when opening/closing to see the discrepancy. So even if you can get him to understand what the screw up is, there’s no way to impart the knowledge they need to deal with it without showing them hands on what’s going on.

How do I know this, because I’m stubborn and my calipers do that to me after I dropped(tried to catch....ended up worse off) mine and haven’t replaced them. Still accurate, just randomly likes to re-zero while opening. I won’t look at the display while measuring something and it’ll read .458. If I didn’t know that I was dealing with a ~1” object, I may not catch the discrepancy if I’m not used to measuring.

Ownership

Hello Guys,
Hi Kim,
I was wondering about cue owners knowing your cue sizes/measurements.
Not like it has to be known, but...
Good to know when buying stuff for the cues, especially Shafts.

Hits'um,
I was thinking about something like that.
I was not sure how the digital caliper works.
I have one Digital. Used it a few times.
Battery died. :sorry:
I always use the mechanical one.
I always close the jaws to check for zero set.
Thanks guys..
Alton

If my old eyes had seen it said mm instead of inches I would have caught that the guy did not zero his calipers before using. I thought it was .530 inches which would be common for someone wanting a snug custom pilot fit. I often use my tablet instead of my computer to read AZ and things are small and I miss stuff.

.500" Pilot

Good Morning Guys/Forum. :)
Hi Chris,
Yes,
That first photo of the 5.30 mm threw me off too. LOL :)

I asked CM to re take his Pilot size.
He sent me this photo yesterday.
12.72 Millimeters = 0.5007 Inches

I just got to turn down the Brass Insert's Pilot diameter a bit.
CM, the owner of the Ginacue, was amazed at his Gina Caps.
I was happy to hear that. :)

Have a safe day everyone..

Alton :)

Added Reply to Dave ( Below) ..
Hi Dave,
yes, I can see that size is still "off".
It is only the JP's Brass Pilot, so, I just going turn it to about .485"
I notice that the early TAD's I do for the Guys, have mostly small .480ish
Pilots.
Thanks all for Helping.
Be safe out there everyone..
Alton
