The tournament was highlighted by some incredible come-from-behind games. Sanchez was losing to Philipoom (the 1995 world champion) 23-1 at the break but surged back to win the match. Palazon was losing to Blomdahl 33-18 in one of the semi-finals games but came back to win 40-38.
In one of the most remarkable matches I have ever seen or heard about, Sayginer got to 40 playing white so Caudron, who had 28, got to equalize. He ran 12, with some of the shots being very difficult. In sudden death Semih made the break but left himself in an awful position and missed. Then Caudron made the break and left himself in an equally awful position but got an amazing hit off the object ball and just had enough to barely touch the third ball and win the match! As they said on Wide World of Sports, "The Thrill of Victory and the Agony of Defeat".
After the July tournament in Porto, Portugal, every player who joined the Professional Billiard Association in Korea will be banned from UMB events. So Caudron, Leppens, Piedrabuena Kasidokostas, Dong Koong Kang and many others will be gone. I was told that playing in one of their tournaments was a one year ban, two tournaments was a two year ban and three tournaments was a three year ban. What a shame!
The Womens' Tournament at Carom Cafe will be Aug. 2-4 while the Verhoeven will be Aug. 5-11.
And, yes, the Verhoeven is a UMB sanctioned event.
