I made it to Michigan City, though, at first, my luggage didn't. It arrived at the Blue Chip Casino Hotel just minutes ago, dropped off by United Airlines, and that's a big relief.

I'm starting this thread so that I may share my experiences over the coming weekend --- my impressions of the hotel, the experience of being here, the social scene surrounding the event, and, most importantly, my impressions of the play.

Let's start with the host hotel. The Blue Chip Casino Hotel has been upgraded and it is very impressive. The playing area is much nicer than it was last year, and you'll do well to pay a visit if afforded the opportunity. I briefly watched some of the pros practicing during the afternoon, including Melissa Herndon, Dawn Hopkins, Melissa Morris, Jennifer Barretta, Kim White, and Vivian Villareal. My early read on the equipment is that it is playing tight, but I guess I'll find out for sure tomorrow.

Socially, prior to the players meeting, I caught up several players, the first two being Allison Fisher and Kim Shaw. I extended the congratulations that were in order for both, as Allison had just been elected to the BCA Hall of Fame and Kim had just won a regional tour event in Tennessee (I was later afforded the opportunity to congratulate Nicole Keeney on winning the US Open spot that was up for grabs in that event). I then caught up with Kelly Fisher, Val Finnie, Maureen Seto, Ewa Laurance and Ming Ng. I attended the players meeting, optional in my case, and was quite surprised when Melissa Herndon announced my appointment to the Board during the players meeting. Pleased to report that some attendees applauded, and far more importantly, nobody booed.

After the players meeting, after briefly greeting about half of the players in the field, I spent some time chatting with Karen Corr, Belinda Calhoun, and Jeanette Lee and I greeted Helena Thornfeldt, Monica Webb, Tracie Hines, Ga Young Kim, Xiaoting Pan, Caroline Pao, Sueyen Rhee, Supadra Boonpasock and several others during a sumptuos mini-buffet, including an open bar, provided by the hotel for the players and some VIP guests of the casino but I made sure not to eat much as I had a dinner appointment with one of the players with whom I am closest.

Several of the players have just returned from Asia after the Shanghai event, and seem pretty bushed. I wonder if this will be a factor in this event.

Well, I guess I best be going to bed.

Thanks ragbug.

I noticed someone playing named Julie Mason-Comitini. Is this the same gal formerly known as Julie Mason-Parker???

I think you might thinking of Joanne Mason-Parker. Julie Mason did play on the WPBA tour a few years back. I remember her playing Jeanette Lee on one of the ESPN Ultimate 9-Ball Challenges (the above mentioned Joanne Mason-Parker played as well).

Day one of WPBA Michigan City is in the books, and it was quite a day.

Not too many shockers, but a few memorable matches.

Sarah Rousey vs Sarah Ellerby
In the battle of the Sarah's, Rousey made the early mistakes to fall behind 6-1, but rallied all the way to an 8-7 lead, when she shockingly failed to get out with ball in hand on the eight. Ellerby tied it and won the double hill rack.

Jeanette Lee vs Iris Ranola
Tense and entertaining up to 4-4, Jeanette foudn her form late inthe match, and a match that looked like an interesting one fizzled.

Julie Kelly vs Pam (treadway) Cimarelli
Julie was on fire in this unexpected 9-1 blowout.

Gerda Hostatter vs Kim White
Playing well early, Gerda jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but Kim fought her way back and tied it at 6-6. Gerda played well down the stretch to win a good match. Kim really put her to the test.

Tracie Hines vs Kim Shaw
Tracie led most of the way, but Kim kept it close. With a very easy nine ball to pull within 8-7, however, Kim had a shocking miss, that spelled the end of her chances.

Line Kjorsvik vs Jasmin Ouschan
The early momentum was seized by Line, who played well to earn a 4-2 lead, but once Jasmin caught her at 4-4, the momentum had shifted, and Jasmin cruised from there to win 9-5.

Melissa Little vs Monica Webb
Good play earned Melissa the early lead, but Monica, the #1 seed, found her form and ran away in the late stages.

Most of the top players looked rock solid today, but the one who I felt played the best pool on Thursday was Karen Corr, who will play Jasmin Ouschan next in what figures to be a crowd pleaser. Yu Ram Cha continues to show a very strong game and her match with Monica Webb in the next match will be one worth watching. Xiaoting Pan also looked extremely sharp on Thursday. The next winner's bracket round should help to clarify who the ones to be reckoned with are.

We shall see.

sjm,
Thanks for the reports...hell, I'm here and still find them informative.

For the other forum members who made the extremely unsound decision to not attend; I will echo the sentiment that the hotel, facilities, tournament room are all excellent - a GREAT place to view a tourney.

The quality of women players just continues to improve with many of them a threat to take off the title.

I will say though that sjm's reporting can sometimes be a bit unreliable....why, just last night around 1 A.M. he gave us a report that he was on his way to bed; to rest up from his reporting duties....errrr...???drinking duties????
About 3 A.M. who should we see exiting the casino but a very happy...???still happy??? ....sjm. While his personal schedule reporting may at times be flawed; it was good to see he was putting in those extra hours to make sure nothing at the venue escapes his notice. Thanks sjm for going that extra mile for all of us.

Day two is in the books here in Michigan City, and it delivered some fine matches.

On the winner's side, on paper, the two best matches were Cha vs Webb and Corr vs Ouschan, and sure enough, both matches delivered some great drama. Corr and Ouschan kept it close all the way up to 6-6, when Jasmin caught her final gear for the 9-6 win. In Webb vs Cha, Yu Ram was near perfect in jumping out to a 4-0 lead, but Monica stormed back, and when she tied it at 5-5, it seemed she was on her way. At 6-6, however, Cha found a second wind and played some fine pool to win 9-6. This young lady seems on her way to being one of the big stars of this tour.

Myuki Sakai and Julie Kelly also staged a fine match that went all the way to double hill, when a choppy and strange rack decided the match in Sakai's favor.

Another fine match was Hines vs Villareal. Vivian was executing the offense better, but Tracie gained with consistently exquisite defense all the way to 5-5, but Vivian made two nice runouts for 7-5 and appeared on the verge of 8-5 when she had a bad miss on a four ball. Tracie ran out and ran the next for 7-7 and apeared to have seized the momentum, but Vivian got to the hill first and, in the next rack, after a Vivian miss, Tracie needed to bank in the seven ball to reach double hill and wasn't up to it, giving Vivian the 9-7 win.

A surprisingly game My Hanh Lac tested Kelly Fisher, but Kelly played two nice racks after 7-5 to close it out.

In matches that were less competitive, Xiaoting Pan won easily over Melissa Herndon, Ga Young Kim won decisively over Jeanette Lee and Allison Fisher crushed Gerda hofstatter.

On the losers side, Kim Shaw, Helena Thornfeldt, and Pam Cimarelli were probably the most impressive players today, each showing solid form. Of the three, Thornfeldt was sharpest, crushing both Kim White and Sarah Rousey to stay alive. Jennifer Barretta was brilliant against AZB's own Cris Delagarza, but was less sharp in her win over Denise Belanger. Dawn Hopkins was solid in her decisive win over Magan Smith, too. Line Kjorsvik rebounded nicely from her Thursday loss to Ouschan, and is still in with a chance.

Who's the one to beat? That's a tough one. Jasmin, Yu Ram, and Allison were surely the stars of the show on Friday, but Saturday's another day.

Should be fun.

I almost missed this thread. Here it is 3:47 am and I'm preparing to take off for a Father's Day fishing trip and see this thread.

You have a very unique gift for writing and I especially enjoy your posts about the women pro players.

Have fun.

Escape form Alcatraz. that's the name I'm giving to the 5:30 round of sixteen matches here in Michigan City.

Pam Treadway Cimarelli had Jasmin Ouschan dead and buried at 8-4 and shooting an easy combo on the nine, but missed, and Jasmin rallied all the way back to win 9-8. Gerda Hofstatter, similarly, played great pool to jump out to an 8-4 lead over Yu Ram Cha, and Cha rallied to get it to double hill. Gerda, however, owned the double hill break and made it count, and was well on her way to a break and run when she hooked herself on the eight ball, and momens later Cha escaped with a 9-8 win.

Karen Corr, who had been superb in her 9-3 wn over Thornfeldt, was a bit shaky in the early stages against Myuki Sakai, hanging a 5-ball at 3-1 ahead, and then hanging an 8-ball at 4-2 ahead. At 4-3, Karne toook her break, and when she returned she played superbly to win in a runaway. Karen will play Yu Ram Cha with a TV round appearance hanging in the balance.

Finally, Ga Young Kim was tested by Tracie Hines, but ran away in the late going to advance to the quarterfinals where she will play Ouschan for a TV spot.

In matches in progress, Lee leads A Fisher 2-1, Pan leads L Smith 4-1, K Fisher leads 4-1 over Julie Kelly, and Villareal and Shaw are just underway.

Well, that's all for now. I'm heading back to the tournament room.

The quarterfinals are in the books and here's what happened.

Ga Young Kim led 2-0 vs Ouschan when the tide turned, and when Ga Young had a chance to run out at 2-2 and failed, her momentum was gone for good, with Ouschan dominating from that point on for a blow out win. Karen Corr and Yu Ram Cha produced a very memorable match, with Corr jumping out to a 6-2 lead before Cha came storming back, but her comeback effort, fueled by kicking that was so brilliant it neutralized the fine defense of Corr, stalled when she miscued on a four ball with a chance to get to 7-7. Karen followed with her best shot of the match, a long cut of the four ball up the long rail with two rail shape on to the next ball, and the blow proved fatal, with Karen backing it up for a 9-6 win. Pleased to note that I sweated the match with fellow AZB poster "T" at my side. Corr will meet Jasmin in the televised semifinal.

Kelly Fisher capitalized on a couple of Alison Fisher errors early to earn a seemingly impregable 6-1 lead, but Allison found her game to pull within 7-4. With a good look at a runout, Allison missed the eight in the next rack, which, proved fatal, with Kelly Fisher advancing. Pan demolished Villareal and will play Kelly Fisher in the televised semifinal. In last year's quarterfinal, Pan and Kelly Fisher produced the best match of the whole event, a 9-8 thriller won by Kelly, so it should be quite a match.

By any reasonable measure, Saturday's matches delivered great drama, and to be honest, the four players left are all in good form, so it looks wide open for Sunday. May the best woman win!

That's all for today, and now it's bedtime.
