How good did he play, Bob?

I remember Dalton thought he had potential to be a great player but I never heard much more about him.
I only really saw him at the 14.1 challenge at Derby City the first year. He had a 103 which is pretty good on Diamonds with 4.5-inch pockets. I think his personal best was 200-some.

We had two run in's/matches.
One in San Francisco on the top of VanNess in 1970 just up the street from Henry Africa's (fern bar), then another at the Sportsmans in New Orleans, late seventies.

Vernon Elliot "The Faceless Man" was possibly the favorite against any of them

I either played or tried to play over half these players. Also Vernon Elliot "The Faceless Man" was possibly the favorite against any of them, he played championship speed!

Bobby Stovall, Calvin "Arkansas Calvin", "Big Brad" from Cleveland, Rick Thompson, Seattle Mike, Joe Lawerence, Fat Randy from Tulsa and Doug Smith were top road players.

How did you come out with Dalton?

What type of game did you guys play?

1970....14.1 in San Fran. I ran 48 and out going to 125....looked up, he and the stake horse walked.

Late 70's....Sportsmans on 8' wet/Gold Crowns 9 ball. Daulton had a stake horse.
We did eye contact during play, ''he didn't forget'' S.Fran.

I was definitely playing better than him by then, but felt with our eye/contact/communication that he laid off ''just a little'' and made my score Allot quicker.
Stake horse had No Clue. I got my money back from the ''walk'' in SF and plus $ome ( I think I won $365).

But Lutman....when I ran into you and he....traveling together at the Country Cowboy in Nebraska....what a POS he was....they way he treated me during play.

Fast Forward to the BCA Nationals in Kansas City.

The tournament room was Emptied Out and I was Playing real good then, and there was Lutman sitting with his lady friend. :p His cue had points in the shaft by the joint. Beautiful/Expensive stick.

He saw me walk in and ''barked'' I pretended I didn't see em....payback was my goal.

I had just beaten the entire Puerto Rican team, and was Pumped up pretty good.

We started off at $50 a rack 9 ball on the box (I finally learned how to play on a small table).
I got em stuck $500....he wanted to raise the bet ( I knew he was short after losing 10 game$) and ''never did like the man after KC)... how he treated me the prior time he beat me outta $200 when you two were together, it was time to return the favor.

You'll love the rest of this story.

He emptied out....$750, got into an argument with his lady friend and followed thru by busting his cue stick in half while I was walkin'.

I smiled all the waaaaaaaaaaay out of the room.

Paybacks are a MF aren't they :).

If he would of been nice to me when he beat me after you beat me in KC, then I would of dbl up the bet, but NO WAY was I gonna give em ''any air''. Or action....Every Again.

His true character needed ''a good Dose''.

He's still the same.

Hope your well, and thx for the help, when I was was at your PCA event, the weekend my dad passed on.

You're welcome, you were always a stand up guy as far as I am concerned!

I think you mean the Cowboy Casino in Kansas.....Hutchinson KS was where I was "with" Gary. I got there on Thursday and didn't sleep until Monday night so I wasn't really with anyone and was hallucination by the end of that ordeal.

Jeremiah Johnson won that tournament and he ended up playing a key part in my life a couple weeks later. It's amazing how life weaves a thread through this world and how if one part hadn't worked out exactly as it did our entire lives would have been different.

I'm sure you can relate, especially leading a life on the road it amplifies life immensely!

Jerimiah and I were playing our match if I remember correctly, on the losers side 9-12. I had Jerimiah 7-6 and was running out to get on the hill. The Bullfrog ref, calling our match said I fouled on a shot. I didn't foul......he gave JerJoh BIH and I lost the match 9-8. The ''so called'' ref a blatant cheat....he was in with JJ. I'll never forget his ref buddy calling that foul on me, when there was NONE. I think that event had $5K added, it wasn't the money, it was the scam/cheat/beat that got em to the next round. Boy that was a moment I never forgot much worse than the Lutman moment. I played for the sport, game. I was raised by men (father chicago Black Hawks and/otto graham HOF NFL Quarterback) about sports, and it was all about true gamesmen ship and honesty and integrity and all that goes along with it. The underworld of pool taught me well about the other side of live. After that, when the Rack in Detroit was littered with MONEY, I never went there when I played my best on a 9 footer, because I no longer wanted to be around those types of people. Life's lessons.
