The Oxford Comma - 08-21-2014, 12:49 PM

Due to the dearth of debatable news topics, righties and lefties I decided to liven things up around here with a good old fashion grammar debate.

I like to use the Oxford comma for clarity. Others have expressed the opinion that it should always be left out.

Real talk, as a former English academic (read: was going to go into academia, but succumbed to the world of social media), I was always taught to use the Oxford comma when it was needed. I've never understood why anyone would be against the Oxford comma. If you're kind of lost on what it is, let's get a refresher from the Oxford Dictionary:

As an author and publisher who has worked with many authors, publishers, and editors; I've had this issue come up many times.

As you can see, I tend to use the Oxford comma....

I've always used it in that setting, having thought I had learned it was actually necessary to do so. As a professional proof-reader in my youth, I would put it in if it was missing.

Optional? I've heard that in the intervening years, but still use it, even when clarity isn't at issue.

No reason not to. One key stroke? Not much effort saved.

Does the Elements of Style call it optional also? That was my Bible for correct (American) usage.

Whatever one chooses, they should try to be consistent.

I tend to use it as well, and try to be consistent, but I do catch myself being inconsistent (and I'm bettin', I don't catch myself as well).

The last book I published was written by a P.H.D. who taught and Cambridge, and edited by an American who had done editing for Simon & Schuster.

I tended to like his punctuation, she didn't......

I was taught never to use it in a very traditional school by an English teacher wearing a mortar board, black cloak and armed with a leather tawse which he used on errant pupils without hesitation.

In post-school life I discovered the real world reality that sometimes it quite clearly helped clarity to use it. Therefore, on those occasions when I think it does that, I use it.
