My man Buddy Hall was kinda snake-bit at this event. He had some ok finishes but not great. Those fields were awesome. For me (age 59) those were heady days for pool in the US. When Sigel was on he was just a pool freak.

Great job of posting this! I have a lot of the Accu-Stats DVDs from the Sands Reno 9-Ball events. Still watch them a lot to this day. The announcers, Grady, Billy, Buddy, they were totally awesome!

What a great list! Brings back a lot of memories for me. I went to many of these events, backing players like Keith, Tang, Danny Medina and Cliff J. I also served as either the head referee, assistant tournament director or tournament director in seven or eight of these events.

This list is a virtual who's who of the best players of that era. Interesting that Buddy never won this event. Parica never won it either. Two of the absolute best players ever couldn't find a way to win this one. That will give you an idea of the strength of the field here every year. Kim sure did have a lot of high finishes, two wins and six second place finishes! Plus several other top four results. Johnny won five times in a five year period and probably has the best record overall of anybody at the Sands. There is only one name I don't recognize - James Ladira. I just can't place him.

Just for the sake of reference, we used to pay out $10,000 in cash to the winner each year (twice!). A big deal was made by Barbara Woodward of the Sands in counting out the winnings on the center table. Most years it paid 10K for first, 6K for 2nd, 4K - 3rd, 3K - 4th, etc. Some years the money was pumped up when the field attracted over 100 players. It was a very good payday for that time. 10K and no IRS report!

I'm guessing well over two million in prize money was paid out over the course of these events.

What di you think of Horsfall's game? As good as he played, he rarely got past Mike Zimmerman in the northwest tournaments I watched them both play in...

Thank you for your appreciative comments Jay. A lot of my time went into this as this information has been mostly collated from various magazines due to a lack of coverage on the internet. I would also like to thank Bob Jewett for providing input on missing years.

Do you know why the tournament got discontinued after 2008 ?

Don't know all the reasons but the economy tankin' in '08-'09 sure didn't help. It had gone downhill some that last few events. Wasn't like the 80's-90's versions.

Cheers! I agree, Grady and Billy in the booth together were always fun to hear. Quite a few of their exchanges stand out in my memory. I do recall seeing a match from SRO11 between Buddy and Grady (Grady whitewashed Buddy 11-0) where Billy and Grady do a voice-over player review. Billy asked Grady something along the following lines: "Grady, how do you withstand the pressure of playing Buddy Hall?" and Grady's response was just hilarious: "It's not too difficult. I just imagine I'm playing you Billy" :grin-square::grin-square:

Watching the '99 final with the GOAT vs. Gallego. Does Ramil still play at all? I remember when he first hit the scene. Really a good player.

As I vaguely recall, there was a pro players' organization at the time that demanded that the Sands put the prize fund in escrow. I think the Sands ignored them, but that's another example of the players peeing on their own feet.

At the same time, I think the amateur league (USPPA) that had events at the same time started to fall apart. From the Sands' view, the tournaments were a good way to fill the hotel and casino tables. Without the hundreds of amateurs, they couldn't afford to host the pros.

The only other info I have on this guy is that he finished 8th in the 2005 DCC One Pocket division (same year as his 4th place finish in Reno), finished 5th in Reno the year before (SRO 40) and shared 7th place with Johnny Archer at Steve Mizerak Championship in 2007. Can't put a name to a face either

Davenport really did have a lot of second place finishes...must have killed him every time seeing how he was fairly local and his family often watched. His little dance when he finally won over Earl was hilarious. Fantastic finals btw.

I can't believe Parica never won this event. I remember one year I was there he yelled into the action room "Anyone here can get the 8...EXCEPT Johnny Archer"

Accu-stats have a video of him playing Frankie Hernandez in the 2003 U.S. Open 9-ball. That's an awesome match. John played a near perfect 9-ball. Just wonder whether that was the guy's regular speed...

That's exactly what I was thinking...… How was that possible? Was the action room that much bigger than the tournament?.... or was the 'book'?

John Horsfall was a Canadian snooker player turned pool player. At one time he was the second best player in Canada after Alex. John was a championship level player, capable of beating anyone on a given day. Mike must had had his number (he had mine too), because John certainly had a higher speed. Mike Z. could get under his opponents skin and make them dog it. His psychological game was very strong and he exuded confidence. I would call him a good shortstop speed and very tough on the 8' bar tables they had up there. He could gamble too and not dog it. All these things made him a tough opponent. I beat him once and never again.
