leveling the base as per instructions

ok, i removed my slate and i'm starting from scratch now that i have my NEW Starrett 8" level. :) BUT, i'm trying to do it using a 3' level as a base for my Starrett and it's not working for me at all. i get a very big difference if i just move the carpenters level a little bit. if i had a 4' carpenters level it might work but a 3' isn't cutting it.... what i decided to do was eschew the carpenters level and take three readings on each side of the base and average them out because this wood is no where near as precise as the instrument. but even with a longer carpenters level its still going to be dicey because there is a slight edge where the end support meets the side supports and that edge isn't consistent. then when i move it toward the ends to measure the front to back level both ends read low on both sides! but i think i've got the base as level as you can get a large chunk of imprecise wood.
