I would use it on house cues and low end cues , find it's limitations and go from there.
Even a 3 legged buffalo has value.

Yeah this.

It'd probably be fine for changing or shaping tips, which is enough for most pool players.

I bought one and I only use it for tip changes and cleaning, waxing. Not all the parts work as well as they could but, I just use a little painting tape to adjusted the fit. Also, it takes a little work to get the drill level. That being said the cost of all the other products out there makes this gadget a lot more attractive. For the cost of some of those other products you could pay to have an expert install tips forever!

For simple tip, finish, wrap and cleaning I would think that a fishing rod lathe would work very well. My father had one and did some really nice custom rod building with it. Now I'm sorry I gave it away after his death.

The lathe is very similar to a cue lathe except for high speed turning. You make the bed yourself out of a stable grade hardwood. The centers, rollers and motor are of high quality and much cheaper than cue stuff. Oh, and about a thousand times better than a electric drill.

He did some cork handles that I'm still using 50 years later.

I have a "lathe" like this, but I consolidate it on a wood support, and made a support for drill machine. It's a decent tool for home tip replacement, ferrule replacement, shaft cleaning and sealing, I was able to put a leather wrap using this one.

You never should leave the rollers to contact directly the shaft, I made a collar from a rubber pipe so I'm using it to protect the shaft.
I wouldn't recommend this tool if you have big expectations, also it's not a portable lathe in my opinion.

Here you can see pictures of my setup.

I bought one just for the roller rest to stabilize the back of the shaft in my 7x12 mini lathe for tips and ferrules. Works fine for that. The whole system? Probably not so much,
