yes, he gets his specially made

There's some misunderstanding, as nobody can have "Dymondwood specialty made." "Dymondwood" is the tradename for a product produced by Rutland Plywood; their manufacturing facility was destroyed by fire on 8/21/2014.

There are other suppliers of dyed laminated veneers. However, anything currently being produced is not from Rutland and, as such, is not their trademarked Dymondwood. Calling it Dymondwood is inaccurate- the product should be referred to by the real product name or manufacturer. Anything else is can be construed as false advertising.

Webbwood

The shaft and butt appear to be made of Webbwood, product every bit as good as Dymondwood and deserving of credit.

This reminds me of that nightmare "Kleenex" vs. Facial Tissue thread on the paper goods forum...

You're usually a pleasant guy, so I will chalk your "Kleenex" vs. Facial Tissue analogy up to a lack of education on the subject. This scenario is more like "Cortland linen" vs "Genuine Irish Linen." While both are quality products, one is no longer manufactured and carries a significantly higher price accordingly.

After the Rutland fire, authentic Dymondwood large enough for cue butts was commanding approximately $60+/LF ($150-180 per butt).
WebbWood™ is readily available and sells for roughly 1/3 the price ($50 per butt).

Once WebbWood™ was discovered, some unscrupulous characters misrepresented their wares and took advantage of the ignorant public.

There are a number of scenarios in the cue world where inaccurate descriptions can drive prices up:
  • Westinghouse Micarta® vs. home-made 'mycarta'
  • ivory vs. camel bone or "imitation ivory"
  • Arizona Desert Ironwood burl vs Asian Ironwood burl
  • Brazilian Rosewood vs. any number of similar rosewoods
  • Kamui black clears vs. a generic laminated black tip with a clear acrylic pad
  • Dymondwood® vs WebbWood™ vs ColorWood®, Spectraply® or DymaLux®

Hope this helps.
