How the Mosconi Team Should Be Picked

The public loves to vote. Elections, television talent shows, etc. Every year we see post after post here all with the same general theme. "X should be on the Mosconi Cup team!!"

Yet, every year, those posts fall by the wayside. Why? We're the real fans, and our voices should be heard.

Below is a list of 6 tournaments. These tournaments all have three things in common.

1. They are played on 9' tables (like the Mosconi Cup)
2. They don't overlap (easy for players to play all 6)
3. They are all within the continental US. (see #2)

October - US Open
January - Turning Stone
January - Derby City Classic 9 Ball
February - Swanee Memorial
July - West Coast 9 Ball Challenge
August - Turning Stone

So here's my proposition in preparation for next year. These 6 tournaments will be the sole events used for players to accumulate points. Starting at this year's US Open and ending at Turning Stone in August 2018.

The top 15 players will be eligible. Out of those 15, the coach for the American team will choose 3 players. The remaining 2 players will be voted on by the fans.

That sounds perfectly fair to me and I also it think it makes sense to have less events spread apart n not overlapping that way it's pretty fair for every one and gives them a fair chance

I think it should be done by height.

I like your idea of the tourneys to play in, BTW.

Below is a list of 7 tournaments. These tournaments all have three things in common.

March - Scotty Townsend Memorial

Not a bad idea but this whole thing could be made even better if....

Matchroom would actually do something for the players and pay for all the free advertising they get out of the chase for the Mosconi Cup by adding a few thousand to each of the tournaments they use for THEIR player selections. When it's all said and done, the players are an absolute afterthought in this whole thing. It's really a joke that the losing players only get 10k a piece. Now I know that's obviously better than nothing but it's still a pittance for the world's best players.

That could be something long term to think about.

I believe with fewer points events, maybe even narrow it down from 7 to 5, they could totally afford to add some money to them.

Scotty Townsend 9ball was on Diamond bar-boxes. The oneP was on big tables.

I think past performance in MC should be considered.

It's a totally different atmosphere and I believe there's some who just can't handle it.

The first step is to be top 15 in points.

After that, if the coach doesn't think a player can handle the pressure, then they don't make the team. Regardless of where they are in the rankings.

Same for the fan votes.

If those are the points events then take the top 5 period, they EARNED the spot afterall. I like your idea

You could, but I think allowing fans to vote could increase viewership.

Plus, it's not like the fans can just vote for anyone they want. Their choices are limited to those made the top 15.

In the end, the most important part of all of this is which events actually count towards points. The 6 I listed would work perfectly.

Or how about this...

The top 3 make the team no matter what.

4th spot is coaches' pick

5th spot is fan vote.

Take the top 16 players on the Mosconi Cup points list and have them play a double elimination tournament. The top four make it and the fifth is a captains pick of the remaining players.

I like this....I'd also like to see Donny Mills get on the team.
Watched him at the Stone...he's a cool guy....Alex said he had a lotta heart.

Simple answer. Team Euro get's to draw from a big pool of players. Let USA draw from Canada and Mexico. USA could use Alex P and John Morra. All done. Winner Winner. Chicken Dinner.

I pretty much only get the news we talk about here so I don't know, but are there any
players that don't really make the tournament circuit that maybe should be considered
if your taking into consideration the "best" players?
There have to be some local or regional people that can't really travel due to work or
family but would considered among the better player out there if they could.

At first I thought a fan vote sounded interesting. After thinking about it for a minute I think that could actually turn out to not be a good idea. We need the 5 best players the US can put together or we don't have a chance. Fans often have their common sense overshadowed by their love for a particular player, usually an older player with a glorious past who can still play but doesn't really have any business being on the MC anymore. It also opens the door for sabotage unless you have a sure fire way to make sure that only fans from the US are voting. Perhaps you could take the fans top 4 and have them play for the last spot to lessen the affect of the stuff I mentioned, but who is going to pay to get them all together?

If the fans can only vote for someone in the top 15 then I don't think what you're suggesting will be as big of a factor. Everyone that makes the top 15 will be a good player.

I did think about the sabotage issue, but it shouldn't be that difficult to prevent. Try visiting William Hill's online sportsbook. If you live in the US, it can detect your IP, and won't even let you access the site.

Surely something similar could be set up on the voting page.

I must say that some of y'all take this Mosconi Cup way too damn serious.

It is just a game...lighten up a bit.

99% of the people in the world aren't going to watch this and they probably don't even know it exists.
