Quick question,,,, it looks like they are playing on the Diamond "smart table".

I haven't played on a smart table and know nothing about them.

How does the table distinguish between returning the cue ball to the head of the table and the object balls to the foot of the table?

It's an optical sensor (camera) that somehow recognizes the white ball. Once in a great while it'll make a mistake and send a 1 ball or 5 ball to the wrong exit.
