Matchroom just announced a junior event along side the US Open at Mandalay Bay (more info at http://www.matchroompool.com/):

Matchroom Pool and the Billiard Congress of America (BCA) are proud to launch the US Open Junior Pool Championship, which will take place alongside the 2020 US Open Pool Championship at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino Convention Center, Las Vegas this April 16-18.

Featuring 16 players invited by the BCA, the format of the new US Open Junior Pool Championship will feature ‘pool play’ followed by a single elimination tournament of the top eight finishers. The tournament will be conducted and refereed by the BCA with the winning player set to receive free entry to the 2021 US Open Pool Championship. The runner-up and third-placed player will receive half-price entry to the 2021 US Open and the top three will receive free entry to the 2020 BEF Junior National 9-Ball Championships.

Really like this. If pool is going to succeed long term it needs to be accessible to young players.

pool = 9 brawl

Pocket Billiards = 14.1
In Europe they have junior 14.1 Leagues that are Govt sponsored - need I say more?

Selling yer cue

We colonists prefer to keep Govt. out of our lives as much as possible.

Are you selling yer cue cause maybe tired of 95% of organized competition being bar league pool? I do understand bout big govt - and would agree to a certain extent. However if small govt is promoting 14.1 to future generation - they cannot be all bad - may that Tribe grow.

I imagine that many European countries sponsor / support Junior players for all of the other games too.

I would not bet on any US Junior player beating any of the top Junior players in Europe, at any game.

Look at Fedor Gorst for example. Going from Junior 9 ball world champion to the 9 ball world champion within just 1 year, and I imagine that Europe is full of monster junior players.

I am happy that Matchroom sports is doing such a great thing for pool in the US. They seem to care about pool in the US being a great success in the future, and that is great.

I would love to see a great future for 14.1 also, and wish I seen it played more often in pool halls. Such a great game, and the only game that never ends.

Un-hijacking the thread, who are some of the favorites to win this new tournament?

pool = gamblin and the 9 ball is just a byproduct of that, 9 brawl maybe some one will fly the cue ball off the table and injur their opponent or someone else. Straight Pool is the way to go. Funny how not to much discussion bout the rack in 14.1, where in 9 ball it's a constant problem - with players having to rack their own and that non sense. Pocket Billiards will only continue it's downward spiral if 9 ball is what they are promoting, rather than the classic game of 14.1.

Ask Fedor if he would rather compete at 14.1 (the classic game) or that of 9 ball - the unclassy rack mechanic crud. You may know the answer without even asking him. 9 ball is really a mute point at this juncture - no matter how hard u try to make it politicly correct. Ref has total control as to whether the wing ball goes or not and the game is really nothing more than a bad joke.

Agreed

“Ref has total control as to whether the wing ball goes or not and the game is really nothing more than a bad joke.”

What is it, race to 6? Race to 5? I can’t remember,
Maybe next year race to 4- hey derby city one pkt
Is race to 3, maybe 9 ball matches will follow-

I know talk is cheap and
Everyone is a critic but
It’s always too late when
“While expanding their customer base
They lost all their customers.”

Again, to attempt to put this thread back on track...it's about Junior players playing 9 ball. If you don't like it...don't post! Best of luck to the few junior players getting this opportunity during what is very likely the top 9 ball event in the world (256 players).

I will post about what ever I so choose, it's not a mystery that 9 ball is losing traction even among the banger crowd.
Oh Scott I give the spf master instructors 50 points going to 100.

well 9 ball aint the right choice - i vote for 14.1.

14.1 is a great game, but it is too boring, to watch, in my opinion.

Be honest, how many players enjoy sitting through a 14.1 match? I wonder how many true fans of 14.1 exist, in this day and age. I am better not very many, compared to fans of 9 and 10 ball. I am betting not many, compared to 1 pocket too.

The answer is, who knows, because 14.1 tournaments are rarely played anymore. I have never personally seen one before, in the last 25 years.

I hear about 14.1 leagues going on, like at Red Shoes in Chicago, but I do not know how popular those leagues are.

It is not my intention to belittle any 9 ball tour, I played on pro 9 tour from early 90's - late 90's, towards the end the camel tour introduced ten ball. The few fans that did attend these 9 ball events were walking out - due to the arguements that would ensue between two world class players. We were all being subjected to the constant wing ball issue - not to mention the soft break. Ten ball did stop some of this, if the bca is continuing to promote 9 ball they are doing so as a result of the ref being able to control who makes the wing ball and who does not - on opening break, I have learned much about the elusive/ slippery bca as of late and it actually does make sense they would want to promote the already failed demographic of 9 ball. Rack yer own - looks poor. Most top players (probly 90%) would agree that 10 ball would be the most obvious chose for rotation pool today junior league or pro. So again I am only speaking from experience. If u think 14.1 is boring - you have to be kidding or just a low i.q.
14.1 will awaken again some day, ref's with white gloves and ball markers, tuxedo's and class. In 9 ball players we see there pants tied to their knee's and low class - jmho. Mosconi's response when asked about 9 ball - "Hit em hard and hope you make something" Where is the skill in that? I could not agree more.
