Which cue would you buy?

I want a cue that's a little flashier than my usual natural wood players and sneaky petes. I've got a cheap budget ($400) and am specifically looking for a production cue.

My current cue is a Steve Klapp cocobolo plane jane with a katana shaft (12.5mm).
I have become accustomed to a 12-12.5mm shaft, which is a small issue with a few of these options as they only come with 13mm standard.

Here are the finalists...

#1. Meucci Skylar Woodward Barbox 1
Price: $366
- free swap for Pro shaft (12.5)
- swapping pin for 3/8 x 10

#2. Fury FUCJ03
Price: $418
- 13mm

#3. Joss JOS55
Price: $399
-13mm

#4. Katana KAT07
Price: $431
12.5mm (oh so sweet)

Thanks for the input!

Joss by far.
In fact - mine is similar, but windows and MOP diamonds instead of reverse points in sleeve.

(I've also been very impressed with my Lucasi - although it's a bit of a softer hit than my Joss. Probably due to the implex joint collar)

For me it's between the Joss and the Fury. Both are great looking cues, the other two are a distant third and fourth place.

If you are going to put me on the spot I would buy the Joss.

Good luck.

Joss.

And you should be able to get the shaft diameter you want. Did you shop around?

I like the Joss, but I have shot with a Katana and thought the cue was pretty good.

I'd go with the Joss as first choice, though.

I have a Joss and would recommend them. The shafts are so nice you won't want to replace it.

Good to hear good feedback on a katana. I based that pick solely on the how much I like their shafts, but the style has grown on me.. I'm not sure where to even test one out.

Meucci with pro shaft. Just got my 1st Meucci last week because I like to look of it. Was against ever owning one for my whole pool career. It came with a pro shaft love the way it hits. As a matter of fact, I ordered the Ultimate Weapon to match the cue from Bob at the expo. I may even pick up another one soon because I love the look of this cue as well.

I applaud you sir for saying that. This particular forum hasn't always been kind to the Meucci brand (perhaps in some cases justifiably so.) Still - I think they have in the past turned out some of the best cues of the late 70s early 80s era, and have in very recent years improved on their quality control.

It's not easy to go against the grain, which is why I admire your post.

While I'll stand by my "Joss choice" ... I own a couple Meucci cues, and am glad to see some positive things about Meucci.

The Joss, or if you don't mind going used 400 bucks should get you a nice Schon as well.

Tough choices for sure.

I kinda dig the classic lines on the Joss cues. I know it's silly for me to say this, but the wood on the Katana cue is such a light color, I feel like it might be distracting. Plus, the butt sleeve/ringwork is just too "busy" for my liking. I don't like the color of the wood on the Meucci. the Fury....meh.

I'd go with one of the Joss cues, probably the one in your second post. Just my opinion.

I had a meucci when I first started playing and I loved the hit and the way it was balanced. I ended up trading it to someone for a mid 90's joss and fell in love. Its a good thing too because that meucci actually exploded not too long after the trade! The guy I traded it to was breaking with it (which probably isn't suggested) and it literally exploded; right where the wrap meets the forearm. I understand why they make break cues, but I still feel like you should be able to break with your playing cue if you want and expect it to hold up. The joss actually ended up getting thrown across a parking lot (ex gf) and its still being played with these days by a friend. All those choices are good for starter cues, but a joss is something you could stick with for your whole pool career.

I thought the same thing when I saw the Katana cue. The forearm is so light it looks totally synthetic for me.

Wish I could help you on that. I was fortunate enough to get to play with one at the local pool supply shop here in Huntsville (AL, not TX...sorry). The gentleman who worked there happened to own one and let me take it for a test drive. Nice solid hit, but not up there with the Schons, Josses, and Mezzes of the world.
