We had a gentleman, Rick Ward, from our pool community pass away at a very young age a few months ago from a car wreck. His fiance, a pool player also, has been unable to play, it has just been too hard.

Shane Van Boening was in town for the last five days, and he took the time to play some 9 ball with her, sign some autographs, take videos, and some pictures. It was nice to see her leave with a smile, and maybe some closure.

Shane was Rick's favorite player, and he had the chance to play with him a few months before his passing. To be able to play Shane with Rick's cues one last time meant the world to her.

Thanks Shane for being that guy!

Nice story, I'm glad he was able to offer her a little comfort. Things like this are one reason I'm a huge SVB fan, pool needs more of this.

It could be disputed that he's a world class player, but he is certainly a world class gentleman!

Good on him, as they say down under.

But...bad on whomever would not have done the same thing.

Unfortunately...there are quite a few that would not have done the same thing.

It's sort of like when Bobby Jones was being praised & highly complimented for calling a penalty on himself when no one else had realised that he had committed a foul. He made the comment that it was sort of like giving him an award for not robbing a bank.

The Game of Pool needs more like Bobby Jones & Shane.

Best to All,
Rick

Wow very cool guy, another reason he's my favorite player, a real ambassador for the game of pool.

Shane just was named Billiard Digest's Player of the Year, for the 5th time. Reading this thread makes it easy to see why he's a champion on and off the table.

Shane is the best thing that happened to pool scene in the last 20 years. He's attitude and dedication for the game as well as his sportsmanship and soul are hard to equal.
Great job Sir sharing the story.
Good for you Shane. Be always like this!
