Great shooting. Was much the same way when I first started..thing is when I did move to a 5 I lost every match that session....10 In a row then was moved down to a 4 for a half session before moving back to a 5 where I stayed for a couple of years. Been a 6 and back to a 5 four times now in 9 ball and once in 8 ball.

I have given up trying to reach a 7 since I feel.my best years are behind me now that I am 62 ..started playing apa way too late in my life lol.

Good luck in attaining your goal.

This week has been one of those crazy weeks again.

Tue night 8 ball I faced a 7 and lost 5-0..i had a few chances to win a rack here and there but as cellophane wrap.once said....couldn't hit water if I fell out of a boat.

Thursday 9 ball I shot a lil better but lost 38-30.

Today in masters I shot dang good....only problem is my opponent ahot a whole lot better.. I only missed 3 shots in a 7-3 loss. I think the whole match only went 11 innings

Tonight I faced a 7 in 9 ball and won 38-40 in a 38-55 race.....oh yea....we were on the 9 footers tonight.....that means I shot pretty dang good for a bar banger..
maybe I need to see you shoot, but I feel like I can make any APA 5/6 an APA 7, if that's their desire. I've been toying with doing a clinic for 5/6's in my area. It's not that they lack skill; they mostly lack knowledge of the basic position shots and the art of the runout.

How many years would this take to accomplish? :p

VNEA league last night. Played ok. Made some totally missable shots for me and missed some fairly easy ones. Still manages to win all 5 games and lead the team to victory.

On a side note there were three shots that came up last night where in the past I would have jumped. Kicked at all of them last night and it worked prefect on two out of three.

An addition to this. They need to know when to not try to run out in the first place. Most games are lost when one player runs down to their last ball without a way of making it.

I'm thinking 6 months.

You haven't met me yet :p

Actually, I'm quite sure it would be a blast. And I'm also quite sure that if I weren't otherwise occupied in my life (work, family, other interests) and could spend more time at the hall, I could improve somewhat on my own, let alone having someone knowledgeable working with me.

Getting to SL7 level? Perhaps, but it would require an awful lot of work, and I'm not sure it could be accomplished in 6 months, but ya never know. Its a fun mental exercise, as it's never gonna happen (unless my Powerball ticket finally comes in).

Hell, I've pretty much given up on making SL6 in my current environment. It takes me too damned long to get out to ever move up in Skill Level. I get there (I do OK in the winning percentage department) but against the better players that isn't gonna cut it. I manage a win against the better players upon occasion, and it tells me there is at least some ability in there, but without regular serious practice I'll never develop the consistency to get to that next level. Its all on me, and I get that.

Again, fun mental exercise.

Depending on a persons work ethic and even natural ability that can be done sooner than that Freddie. Everyone learns at a different pace of course. I went from never touching a cue (2 in APA) to a 6 in 1 year. Now I'm just a paper 7 :D

I don't disagree with these for APA 5's or so, but my posts was specifically talking about running out. Most games are lost when a player (again, I'm saying APA 5/6) doesn't have that fully understanding out of how to run out. By learning how to runout, even difficult outs, that gets them to the next level (APA 7's), where running out more racks from anywhere is the mark of that skill level.

You'd be surprised how some of the concepts that I (and many others) show people that can already shoot helps to win way more games (or stop losing so many games).

Maybe when I'm in Maine, we can get together.

I wish you lived in my area..:grin-square:

Most higher level players around here don't want to help.out lower levels. Take an 8 I played a few months ago..we are not best buddies or any thing but we always say hi to each other she we cross paths and some times even joke around a lil bit. Here is the conversation I had with him the last time we played each other. During the match I muttered under my breath after I made a shot....dang that cue ball did not go where I wanted it to. He pipes up and said ....you used the wrong English. I said.....you know the tables are open before we play every week ...if you would not mind working with me before league one night the beer and pizza is on me. His reply .....why ? ....so you van beat me worse than you are now ?

I replied...look.at it this way..if you worked with me I would surely go up and then it would be harder to beat you than it is now with you spotting me 28 points..he said no thanks..

I did have a 9 work with me on my break for a half hour one night and I did help.me out a lot. The only reason he helped me was because he wanted to trade break cues with me which I agreed if he helped me a little..

Actually it helped me a lot. I am 5-2 in 9 ball this session..i held 2 different 6's to less points than I needed..i won one 38-30 and the other 38-33. I also won against a 7 holding him to only 40 points. Won a close one vs another 8 with him only needing 4 points but hey a win is a win

Unfortunately my 8 ball game has regressed....0-4 so far this session. Highly unusual for me.

Any WA back to your post cornerman. Although I think my best years are behind me I dont doubt I could be a 7 with the right training.

I completely agree. It took a while for mw to come around but a good friend kept telling me ....if you can't run out ....play safe. 2nd beat piece of advice I ever received....actually it runs neck and neck with the other one..play the table....not your opponent..

Those 2 pieces of advice helped my mental.game a lot.

Now that the wifey roped me into subbing in Double Jeopardy we will see how rusty I am from taking off a lot of time from pool. I did a couple of makeup matches last night and shot very soso in 8 ball winning hill/hill 5-2 with 1 B&R and then 9 ball went a bit better winning 65-14 with 1 9 ball snap. I have an injured right thumb (they think tendonitis) which has become a big nuisance but hopefully after PT multiple times a week I can get that healed and see if I can get back to playing decent.

I went 5-1 at our city cups in 9 ball in June, went 8-0 during summer session, won a playoff match, and then won first week of last session in 9 for a grand total of 15-1 record in 9 ball and still have stayed a 6. I have singles regional qualifier in 8 and 9 this weekend (I've never done them before) so hopefully the good shooting will continue. I'm a 6 in both and hopefully will get a chance to go to Vegas after this weekend.

I was going to take a season off from playing league to work on fixing some bad habits which I believe have been holding me back.

I went up to the room last night just wanting to hang out. Had a couple drinks and decided joining a team was a good idea. Funny how that stuff works out.

I played a new player in NAPA. I think he is an APA 7 in nine ball.

We played nine ball. Race was 7-5. I beat him 7-2. After the match, he asks me if I gamble and I say sure. He asks for my number so apparently there will be some gambling in my future.

It was our turn on the 9 footers tonight and I finally got the monkey off my back in 8 ball. After going 0-5 so far this session I faced a 6 and won 4-2 o. A 4-5 race.

On 9 ball I am waiting for this dream ride I am on to stop and reality to kick in . I can't believe how my 9 ball game is going. I am 11-2 this session.

Thursday night I faced a 6 and won 38-33 in a 38-46 race
Friday night faced another 6 and won 38-24
Tonight I faced another 5 and won 38-14 for a score of 18-2.

Unbelievable how my 9 ball game is going also unbelievable how my 8 ball game has sucked until tonight

I'm in a similar spot as you. Had singles qualifiers this weekend. Shot horrible in 8 on Saturday. Sunday I shot lights out winning a spot in Vegas after going 5-0. Including city cups in June and my summer session and start to the fall and regionals I'm 20-1 in my last 21 9 ball matches. Crazy hot streak. This was my first time doing the singles qualifier and my brother qualified in 8. Awesome weekend.

I finally got beat in both 8 ball and 9 ball.

I had been undefeated this session as I have only been playing higher ranked players.

I have avoided races in 9 ball where they are rated a 2 or 3 because I have to give up so many balls, which has allowed me to win every week.

The guy that beat me in 8 ball and 9 ball (same guy) was ranked lower than me but we played pretty much even. He was a fine player.

I got sucked back into APA too. I didn't even have a drink so I have no excuses. I did have a four snap 9 ball set but of course that is only 8 "points" Who is the APA 7 action guy? Need some more sheep.

4 patches is exciting. You need to work on making balls other than the 9 ball so you can run out.

PM sent.

I have hesitantly agreed to rejoin APA and get on a an APA 9-ball team next session. As far as I know, it's only 9-ball, not double jeopardy or mixed games or whatever. Is it still the handicap ball count race? The last I played would have been 2010, I believe.
