Little Joe

Joe Villalpando has some great stuff. He gives you the tools to get the cue ball anywhere on the table that you want it. Reading patterns isn't covered, nor is the stroke and very basics. When you know the shot, he gives you the tools to make it.

When I was getting frustrated trying to coach a friend over a thousand miles away I bought all of Joe's DVD's and had them drop shipped to my friend. poolIQ.net is one site to get his stuff from. I think he gets the full monte if you buy there but I am not certain.

There are other instructors out there, I haven't seen all of their stuff. I won a bunch of Bert Kenister's stuff in a drawing. Some of his stuff is nothing short of great. Some good, some I think Bert decided it was time to put out another video. I can't think of any other instructional stuff I have gotten at the moment. I did get an early DVD of john schmidt's. He told what he was thinking and why he was shooting like he did. To be honest I can't say it did a thing for me other than saving me more money when he releases something else.

When I started playing pool there was almost nothing available, no books to speak of, no videos, no Net or Youtube. Now there is almost an embarrassment of riches and the hardest thing is picking among all of the things. I suggest trying to find someone whose style of play matches yours as much as possible and who has a long term reputation as an instructor. None of the instructors are the best instructor for everybody. If only it were that simple!

As a new player I watch TONS of YouTube videos on pool. I think I've probably watched them all, if not most of them. After a couple years of filtering down, I only follow Sharivari, Dr Dave & 'lil Chris.

Sharivari keeps putting out good videos... some with animated explanations.

I disagree wit u, also I defeated Efren in bank Pool once at Southern Classic - so i have some credentials. I teach and compete - u can be accomplished at both. So u should come up with somethin' different than that.

He was just doing a little trolling complete with wink icon so he could walk it back easily. Some truth to competitors making poor instructors, especially while still competing. Different skill sets are needed and comparatively few people have both of these skill sets. The drive that makes a great competitor leads you to want to strangle a student after you have explained something to them seventeen times and demonstrated it to them fourteen times and they still don't get it! Some can turn their drive down or off and teach, many can't, especially can't until they get older.

A chuckle about the best instructor in any field I have ever worked with: After he had explained something to one person three or four different ways and they still didn't get it while the rest of the classes' eyes were starting to glaze he just said, "Magic!" He was done explaining.

In my opinion Tor Lowry has the best videos out there. I used to watch his videos a lot when I started playing pool and was hungry to get better. He just started to release some new stuff on his channel.

In no particular order, instructional videos I found helpful:

  • Jerry Briesath
  • Dr. Dave
  • Barry Stark
  • Sharivari
  • Robert Byrne
  • Tor Lowry

As a Snooker Player...Barry Stark

For Chinese 8 ball...Gareth Potts

American Pool...CJ Wiley and Tor Lowry

What they all have in common is short lessons and to the point. Some little hint in a 3 minute video that I tuck away in my billiards tool chest.

My eyes aren’t glazing over getting out a math protractor and then, yawn.......I’m in the sciences and find flaws in the geometry of half of a certain fellow’s ‘scientific’ calculations.

Then there are videos I just enjoy watching. ‘Break for life’ (snooker), etc. They don’t teach me a lot but are just entertaining and feed my enthusiasm. The new ones by Rolly are similar. Billiards for me is fun and not a chore. Sharivari videos are entertaining if kept short and remembers the KISS concept...keep it simple, stupid. What also helps if there is a lot of actual shooting in a video...I can’t stand yammering when you could have shown the actual shot 6 times in the meantime. Also, point to left English, right, etc...can’t always follow ...like dancing...need to get oriented.

What I pay zero attention to in videos is grip, posture, etc. I’m with Shaun Murphy, pro snooker player, ‘just pick up The cue however feels natural and relax‘...he has the best stroke in all of billiards. I also don’t watch any 9 ball videos on ‘how to run out’. Tedious as hell and has never actually helped me in an actual game situation.

I absolutely LOVE Sharivari on Youtube,
Unlike so many Pool Youtubers, he speaks simply, gets to the point, has great production. He includes lessons on subject matter that I find extremely important & interesting. He breaks down important educational info in a simple, easy to understand way.

I am a proponent of SPF. Consequently for people just starting out I would recommend
Scott Lee's and Randy's 2 DVD set on fundamentals. Loaned mine out and can't remember the title.

Joe Villapando's--So simple yet so instructive. Was very glad to see it previously
mentioned.

Bert Kinister's "9 Ball 60 Minute Workout." Learn this before you ever play a game of
9 Ball. 27 non scratch shots that come up all of the time.

Tor Lowery-- Had never heard of him but his DVD's are an absolute must. What a
heavy ton of info in an understandable format. If you have
constructed your fundamentals and basic shot knowledge from those
above this will give you knowledge to play with most anyone. All that
is left is for you to do is grow the balls and the mental toughness
needed to win on the table. To my knowledge there is no DVD
for this.

Grady Matthews. I've watched every video I've been able to find of his. If you are allready a seasoned pool player, his are the videos to watch. Bert Kinister has some good ones too. He got greedy after a while and some of his videos are just filler material. Nobody could ever accuse Grady of that! Sigels videos are on Youtube, and his early ones are great, not the one with Trudeau in it.

I like Ralph Eckert out of the modern instructors. Most of the modern American instructors are way to focused on very basic things. I'm not talking about fundamentals, but BASIC fundamentals. If you can run 3 balls, you'd be wasting your time with most of them. It's fine, the money is in teaching beginners, but I no longer consider myself a beginner and I doubt most of the people on this forum do. If you want really advanced fundamentals, you have to over to the world of snooker.

Since this is thread is alive again, I found Jim Rempe's "How to Run a Rack of Straight Pool" and "How to Run 100", both available from Accu-Stats, to be very informative. Plus, Jim's got that kind of accent and delivery where you can just listen to him for a few hours and not get tired of it.

He did a player review tape with Pat Fleming too with, I think, about an 80 ball run in it from the 2000 US Open.
