Really Dumb Question on Rosewood

So as I started to finish up this cue and cut the final taper, I noticed that the rosewood started to get more and more curly. Is this fairly common when tapering very old pieces? I'm not complaining, just curious if there is anything I need to consider when tapering older pieces next time.

The wood probably had darkened up over time so you could not see the curl even though it was there all the time. Now that you are turning it you are seeing what a fresh cut piece looks like. With modern finishes you should be able to see the curl for many years to come.
