Why do balls skid so much?

Is it me, or is there more skids lately than usual?

What could it be?

Looks like one of USA's players is helping out team Europe quite a bit! This is making my blood pressure rise. Giving way too many games away.

Finish/polish on the balls, or maybe even the fact that the Americans aren't used to the "X" style of rest (mechanical bridge). In almost every case, I see (e.g. Mike, on that 6-ball) aiming "down" on the cue ball with a short bridge length. They have to open it up when you use the "X" style of rest!
