Sands Regency Tournament In Reno - 09-06-2020, 07:06 PM

Anybody hearing anything about this tournament possibly being resurrected? It was so popular for nearly 25 years. The first 18 years or so they had two tournaments a year.

Anybody got any scuttlebutt? I have sent an email to them regarding this. Will keep posters posted.

No, and I doubt that it will be. A major reason for the Sands to have the tournament was that prior to each pro event there was a USPPA (handicapped 9-ball league) tournament. That brought around 256 league players to the Sands from all over California. The USPPA has not had an event since this one: https://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=213553

It would be great if the Sands did start having events again, but it has to make financial sense to them.

Bob, I also think they had 10 Gold Crowns stored there for each years play. They didn't take up much space when broken down.

I think it would take someone in the Sands management who was seriously interested in promoting the event. I believe the events had that in the events coordinator who was working there.

I would love to see The Sands back up and running but without the help of the USPPA it just does not seem possible in my humble opinion. I had some great times there and would love to take my two boys to play there but then again it just wouldn't be the same.

I remember flying out in 1987 or 1989 as a spectator, walking to my seat on the plane, I
sat next to a gentleman who looked like Jesus, it was Louie Lemke, that flight sure
seemed short as he was a very interesting person and I have cherished the memory
to this day. RIP Louis "Louie" Lemke, gone way to early.

He and I went to the vegan restaurant across the river from the Casino. First time for me, I did enjoy it. Crossed paths many times with So. Side Louie as one of his nicknames. We also ran into each other unexpectedly at Mardi Gras, with his new gal friend, VW camper and of course, his guitar. Loved that guy.

thx for the memory.

It would be GREAT if the SRO was resurrected. Just loved going there. First time I went was when Jimmy Fusco won! Great Hotel; great fans. Second time I went I did not know who Jose Parica was. I saw him beat Buddy Hall 13-12 in a nail biter. I remember thinking, wow this little guy can really play. LOL. It was wonderful--Scott Smith was tourn director and Billy I and Grady in the Accu-Stats Booth. Fun times.

The Sands tournament was something I looked forward to every year; it happened twice a year so it was doubly good......My own reminiscences:

It was the first time I ever saw Earl play...his style seemed so smooth and natural; I made a mental note to watch his matches every chance I could.

An after hours gambling match between Annigoni and Lemke; I believe it was something like 10 ahead for $5K. I was watching it with a friend of mine; it started out going back and forth for a while, and my friend left because he thought it was going to be a long match....shortly after he left, Annigoni started getting some good breaks and won quite a few in a row and went on to finish in a short time...

Seeing and listening to Bucktooth in the practice room barking at all the pros in attendance; flashing his roll of Benjamins, trying to get the nuts in a game through a big spot...

Yes, I think it falls into the category of an era long past and we won't see the likes of it again...sadly...
