Where is the 626?

John Schmidt owns the record and no one can take it away from him. I don't think he should own the run itself. 626 is part of pool history and the video should be available for pool fans and non-fans alike to learn from and enjoy.

Augusta National has put all of the Masters broadcasts online, where they can be watched for free. (Of course, it's not totally free - viewers pay with their attention, and in turn Augusta makes money from ads.) John should do the same. It will do more to promote him, promote the game, and promote his sponsors than trying to sell DVDs to the already-converted.

I would like to see Predator pay John for the video....and run it as a promotion.
....and an exhibition tour for John like Brunswick did for Willie.
....with Predator sales at every venue.

Sure, after getting $millions from the live TV airing of the Masters.

Sadly, John did not run 628 which is twice 314.

As for the general thrust of the thread, how many pool players know how to really promote themselves? The only ones I can think of are the exhibition players and The Black Widow.

Unlike some of our posters, I think John has lots of time to take advantage of the 626.
....after all, we were still talking about the 526 in 2019....
...I doubt a month went past on AZ where Willie’s run wasn’t mentioned.

I sorta fancied John making a deal with Pat Fleming.
John’s idea of showing it in private viewings where you pay admission like a show?
....personally, I’m not going to sit there that long....for me, I’d watch it in four parts.
...Predator has deep pockets, I hope they make a deal with John.

Fashionable?

Good point. Fashion ties in nicely with this discussion. Because fashion is all about being SEEN.

I don’t know where you boys hang out or play or catch second-hand smoke, but I do know this:

The ONLY reason folks aren’t playing 14.1 is because they’ve never been shown the game. If they never see it or have the chance to play it and appreciate everything about 14.1, they can’t play it. They see 8/9/10 everywhere - and thus that’s all they ever play. I know. I know. It’s a shame isn’t it?

There isn’t ONE person I’ve introduced the game of 14.1 to and all of its nuances that they haven’t loved it. And play it. Almost exclusively.

Maybe you (we) should be sharing the game. Teaching, coaching and inspiring. Which is the plan once I get John’s record run on any form of media at any price.

Maybe we do things different here in Texas

Please tell me how you think John will get "$millions" from this video, or anything approaching that.

He is already leaving money on the table every day by not putting it on YouTube.

I wasn't suggesting he could. My point was about the free Masters archive being available and how it was free only after Augusta national made millions from it's live broadcast.

do people actually think this makes a difference?

willie set the record in 1954 after playing straight pool just about every single day since the great war ended

if we follow that logic, then we must conclude that john schmidt's run is even MORE impressive because he had at least ten fewer years to practice

From what I have read Mosconi played only when he had to -, tournament - exhibitions - and it was stated he would no sooner play pool in his spare time as a waiter would wait on tables in his spare time.

Guess I'm the only one who'd still like to see an unedited video first.

Lou I am with you. Frankly I find the run fishy at best. He is streaming all of his runs, and then the day after announcing he has found a secret, he "announces" that he has made the ring. In my view if there is a single cut, skip or view change in the video I would not allow it. It was seen by what, two people?

Stanley Kubrick has been dead 20 years so it wasn't the same guys that faked the Moon Landing.

lol please slide over my way so I can get close enough to catch your second hand smoke
You got a better chance of hitting the lottery in 3 states at the same time than 14-1 coming back in fashion ,
You seriously need to get out and take a peak around in the pool rooms and see how many play the game and listen to how many times you hear a peep about it , in fact if it wasn't for me asking one of the Roy's Basement backers about DO taking a run at it the other day I wouldn't have even heard his named mentioned anywhere other than here since the record was broken,
There is zero doubt in my mind if any of the old timer games becomes fashionable it's one pocket by a landslide

Not smoking anything my friend.

I hold out hope that 14.1 makes a comeback, just like 1hole has in some circles.

I truly believe it will. Now, will we be alive? Thats the question.

One of the biggest loses from this is the fact that noone took advantage in recreating the US Amateur Championship for 14.1

There are enough 14.1 leagues around that someone should have promoted and held something just to capatilize on this and start from there.

People say there isn't a market for 14.1 but, I say there is a market for "anything". It's just knowing "how" and "when" to do so.

Everyone knows it would be tough sell but, "some" know its possible.

Anyways, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it happens while I'm still kicking.

There's a market for everything. I'm currently reading a book from the co-owner of kaufabe commentaries, probably the biggest shoot interview company for wrestling. They turned that into a million dollar company and that's because they are fans first before business suits.

Yes, there is definitely a market for 14.1, it's just that it will be a steep ladder to climb to make it into a million dollar company.

Actually scratch that idea, that should have came after a gathering of some of yesteryear's top players in a sort of legends of pocket billiards event. THAT'S what someone, hell JS should have done it, should have promoted a week or so after the record was broken.

Imagine having Mike Sigel, Buddy Hall, Nick Varner, Ray Martin, Dallas West, Allan Hopkins, Jim Rempe, Keith McCready and whoever else has been retired for a good weekend of pool and having fans there to enjoy it?

When the stolen Pam Anderson/ Tommy Lee porn video surfaced and was distributed online by a vid company in mid-1990s , there was pent up insatiable demand (pardon the pun) that broke the internet.
Pam and Tommy sued the company and they eventually settled (likely they took cut of revenue). The vid grossed $70+ Million. Unheard of numbers for a porn vid. Some say whole thing from leaked news, media circus was shrewd marketing strategy crafted by Pam/Tommy.
Not suggesting that strategy in this case

I personally wonder many of the same things but am willing to give the benefit of the doubt.

However, without an *unedited* video, at some point in the future... the run never happened and I don't care who says otherwise.

No, not really. This is the highest exhibition run ever.

Cranfield's runs, which I have little doubt happened, two of them over 700, were practice runs and I agree they shouldn't count as the world record.

So what is the difference between exhibition and practice when it comes to straight pool? Or any game really. It's not like John was doing his run in front of a packed room live.

If it was done, and can be verified to whatever standards these things need to be verified, it should count.

I'd like to see it but unlikely among the mass of bangers who constitute the majority of people who play pool. 14.1 requires too much skill. Barbox 8 ball and 9 ball are popular because they are easier.
