guy says its a 3 piece slate, might not be the kind im looking for
3 piece would make me think its bigger than bar size

It's a 70's model Valley. Never heard of one with a 3 piece slate. If that were to be true, I would guess that it would have been a fully custom job. I'd better guess that the owner is clueless.

If it is in fact a multi piece slate table I wonder how one would get under the slate to shim them????
I had to saw my Valley in half top and bottom wise to get the cabinet into our basement. I used dowels when I put it together and backed most of the seam, it actually turned out pretty nice. I intend to paint the corners black and wrap the rest of the cabinet with wood grain shelf paper. The table is solid and level, thats all I was worried about. Besides, its just a second table, my GCI is my good table, I just wanted a Valley to practice on for Valley tournaments.
