Trump’s Pitch to Black Voters Not to vote for him, but to keep them from voting - 02-13-2020, 02:25 AM

An Odd Stance for an American who believes in our Great Country. You would almost think instead of wanting it to be what's
made it great, he wants to change it into something that is great for him and his selected followers.

Trump’s Pitch to Black Voters
Not to vote for him, but to keep them from voting at all

President Trump delivering the State of the Union address on Tuesday

President Donald Trump’s State of the Union speech on Tuesday was composed of his usual blend of half-truths, misleading statements, and flat-out lies, surprising no one who has heard Trump speak before. But where Trump slightly differed from his usual brand of self-aggrandizement was in his direct attempt to court black voters with an economic message, festooned with statistics about unemployment, poverty levels, and wage growth.

“The unemployment rates for African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, and Asian-Americans have reached the lowest levels in history. African-American youth unemployment has reached an all-time low,” Trump said. “African-American poverty has declined to the lowest rate ever recorded.”

From the moment Trump entered the chamber, the evening’s tone was less sober address and more MAGA rally, with Republicans chanting, “Four more years!” At times, the chamber was more like a reality TV show, when Trump went beyond the usual highlighting of guests in the gallery to score political points. On one occasion, he singled out a single black mother and her daughter from Philadelphia to demonize the public-school system. Trump then awarded fourth grader Janiyah an “Opportunity Scholarship” to attend any school she wants—assuming it’s a private or charter school. Trump tied this scholarship to the “Be Best” initiative from first lady Melania Trump, and all three women were showered in applause. (Knowing how Trump and his organizations hand out scholarships, it’ll be important to double-check the follow-through.)

The Trump team must know they’ll never win the support of African American voters. Eight in ten black Americans said Trump is racist, according to a Washington Post-Ipsos Poll from January of this year. But an economic argument may be Trump’s greatest strength in his re-election campaign. Following Steve Bannon’s 2016 recipe for populist economic rhetoric and demonizing foreigners, Trump doesn’t have to convince black voters to turn out for him, but instead try to convince them they can afford to stay home because things are OK.

More from Brittany Gibson

Most minorities in the United States vote for Democrats, but since Obama’s 2008 campaign engaged minority voters, and black voters in particular, to turn out in record numbers, those numbers have slacked off. Such a lack of enthusiasm works to Trump’s benefit and, of course, is augmented by the Republicans’ systematic implementation of obstacles to voting in black communities: enacting voter suppression laws, purging people from voter rolls, closing down voting sites, and making it harder to restore voting rights for the formerly incarcerated.

By focusing broadly on low unemployment rates, particularly if the Democrats select a nominee who doesn’t engage minority communities, Trump could convince some people to stay away from the polls and avoid the hoops that many black and brown people in this country have to jump through to vote. Nor does it bode well for Democrats that the Iowa debacle confirmed skeptics (not just minorities) in their doubts about the value of voting.

As of Wednesday morning, it seems that the winner of Iowa’s caucuses may be Pete Buttigieg, who has only recently climbed to 2 percent support with black voters in the polls. So far, he’s proven that he does not know how to connect with this most reliably Democratic-leaning constituency. Nor does Michael Bloomberg’s track record with blacks and Latinos when he was mayor of New York bode well for minority voter participation.

In 2020, Team Trump knows his base is secure. His State of the Union address laid out another element of his strategy: to show minority voters a bare minimum of attention and diminish the perception of differences between him and his eventual opponent. Not since Kanye West visited the Oval Office has Trump waged such an effort—but it still could work.

As usual, you're dead wrong. I know, shocking. The black vote will be a key to the rout.

Stay in Central North Carolina lest you risk falling off the edge.

Some people should honestly not vote, have children, or leave the couch to step foot outside. Keep watching 911 believing all Fire Stations are 40 Million Dolllar Mansions.

Black folks in North Central West Virginia were about the only folks who didn't like Trump although he seems to have lost some supporters since the trial. I guess some people believed all those lies and BSif one believes the polls. About half felt he should have been convicted which surprised the heck out of me.

God bless each and every one of you

How about instead of opinion we actually see what minorities are saying. Your article of wishful thinking, toast.

Three polls show huge jump in minority voters’ support for Trump

by WorldTribune Staff, December 1, 2019

Another poll has showed that President Donald Trump’s support among minorities is growing exponentially.

A Marist poll released over the Thanksgiving weekend, which escaped the notice of the major media, found that 33 percent of non-whites approve of the job Trump is doing, and 29 percent say they would “vote for president Trump.”

Three new polls were bad news for 2020 Democrats, and unreported by their major media allies. / YouTube
Both the Emerson and Rasmussen polls from last week show Trump’s approval rating among black Americans is 34 percent.

The findings of the three polls are disastrous for Democrats, analysts say, and point to a potential Trump landslide in 2020.

Ohio Pastor Darrell Scott said that Trump is the “the most pro-black president that we’ve had in our lifetime.”

A recent RealClear Politics op-ed noted that black Americans are beginning to say such things as “The Democrats just want our votes, not our babies. The Democrats don’t care about our children getting a good education, while they send their own children to private schools. They talk about helping us climb the economic ladder of success, but it is Donald Trump that has finally begun to make that happen.”

During the recent “Black Voices for Trump” conference in Atlanta, Trump told the audience: “We’re going to campaign for every last African-American vote in 2020. We’ve done more for African-Americans in three years than the broken Washington establishment has done in more than 30 years.”

And, according to the New York Times, Trump added that “the Democrat Party already left you a long time ago … if you don’t want liberal extremists to run your lives, then today we say welcome to the Republican Party.”

In a Nov. 13 op-ed for the Washington Examiner, Vernon Robinson III and Bruce Eberle, wrote:

Clearly, Trump’s attention to black voters, his signing of the First Step prison reform bill, and his policies creating the lowest unemployment rate for black Americans in history have had an impact.

Also important, a number of prominent black Americans who have moved from the Democratic Party to back Trump, such as Candace Owens, and the recording star Kanye West, have not done so quietly, nor have they acted defensively. They have refused to be shamed into silence by the Democrats and the left-leaning news media. Instead, like their forbears in the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 60s, they have gone on offense, courageously exposing the fact that the policies of today’s Democratic Party are often completely foreign to the values and aspirations of black Americans.

Perhaps that’s why current polls show black support for Trump approaching 30 percent — a dangerously high number for Democrats. If Trump wins even that much of the black vote, he will be reelected in a landslide. The movement of black Americans to Trump may not be as dramatic as the shift to FDR in 1936, but it may well be significant enough to create a red wave victory in 2020.

I hope someday you find reality Robin and can tell the difference between that and dembot wishful propaganda.

The rail is your best friend.

Wow, hard to find a more biased article...….

But, if the black vote were not moving (slightly) more in favor of Trump, no one would feel the need to write this article....

Yep, you convinced me, i'm not voting for Trump. I'm voting twice

Economy is good, folks are working, trade deals done, Trump stood up to China and China blinked, Obama and Bush didn't have the stones to do that, it was a risky gambit, but sometimes you have to take the "flyer" when there is no safety.

Does it suck things are going so well as soon as Obama left office? Or, are you generally glad that folks have found jobs, can feed their families and we have terrific trade deals, and factory jobs are coming back and businesses are building new plants.

Yeah, gotta suck to be liberal in these times.

Glad to hear you've finally seen the light. Obama did a bang up job on the economy with the Recovery Act and boost that came from the
ACA that Republicans are still trying to destroy. I'll give them this they nearly did it with the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act since most kept the money saved
from tax cuts and no cuts in the budget.

Everything comes to an end eventually and one day this mounting debt will have to be addressed.

I would have much rather had steady growth vs. throwing gas on a fire and according to my financial guy (Conservative Republican) very little has changed
except the title of those agreements so dream on about big changes. Its like a advertisement for Trump more than a brand new deal.

I am a registered Independent/Unaffiliated who isn't fooled by the noise and fury of the current administration that doesn't have a policy except for the one
where they try and destroy the accomplishments of the last for their corporate partners which sounds very much like a Fascist Manifesto that is ever growing.

It may suck to be a liberal, it may also suck to be a Conservative whose been taken in by a movement so un American in nature that is borders on and crosses
over into Treason. It's like you got on a Merry Go Round that stopped being fun as it goes closer and closer to hell.

At some point it either goes on and we plunge into the abyss or we wake up and choose a better path.

A telling sign is when establishment Republicans stand up against the chosen one because they realize he's the Pied Piper whose leading the entire Party into
a canning factory rather than the sustainable pathway to winning all peoples hearts.

He would have us hating one another rather than encouraging us to make each other better.

I will believe it when I see African Americans going along with him otherwise its not happening.
