Not even close to a haiku. Start with three lines and then fight the meter. Haikus are no joke -- very disciplined writing. But, it was a good joke.

Now it's a haiku (could use a seasonal reference).

Here you go, some real shit from Poolhead:

5 Hustler themed haiku
Pepijn de Wit 24/02/2017 Poetry 1 968
– In memory of Freddy ‘The Beard’ Bentivegna and all other pool hustlers up there

It’s them, going to work when everybody else is done. Acting in the dark. Distracting and deceiving. Two-faced people who master the art of impression management. Playing people with their tricks like magicians. It’s their income. Their rush. Their need. Their life. It’s what they do:

“Give him every morning the money that he may gain during the day, on condition that he does not play – you will make him unhappy. It will perhaps be said that what he seeks is the amusement of play, not gain. Let him play for nothing; he will lose interest and be wearied” [1]

#1
A cold winter night:
the hustler holding his cue
taking their money

#2
Dark winter morning:
hustlers walking down the street
their hands holding cash

#3
First hot summer night:
people trying to cool down
hustlers warming up

#4
Distraction is key,
tricks are used upon himself
a hustler beaten

#5
The sound of pool balls,
two-faced person deceiving
one hustler at work

[1] Polsky, N. (1967) Hustlers, Beats, and Others Chicago, Aldine Publishing Co..

Farbeit from me to overlook AZB's own poets:

Pool

This is inspired from a league night a few weeks ago where one of my players arrived with a few pages of haiku poems that he had written for fun. This got our whole team into writing some pool-themed haikus for the evening. I thought it might be fun to see what the AZB community might come up with for a pool haiku.

For those who don't know what a haiku is, it is a 3-line poem where lines 1 and 3 have 5 syllables and line 2 has 7 syllables. Here is a haiku to get things started:

Balls roll all over
Pockets accept moving spheres
Cloth covers the slate

+ others

Aw I keep it comin' and comin' across the table
And if I miss, I never miss, 'cause I'm able
I'm lookin' forward and I'm lookin' over my shoulder
And I'll make a simple sin to make the bonus
But I'll never bless the rest, so never cease
I'll do a mother****er with this restin' piece
Cause' what they saw they never seen or even heard of
And if they live, it's just another body murdered.
Faith No More, Boo-Yaa T.R.I.B.E.

So keep your nose clean keep it on a shoe string
With no opposing no undue disclosing
Nothing stale nothing old or decomposing
Nothing empty nothing bold or over knowing
Nothing more than tasteful reconstruction
Of the plot that edifies all our instructions
It's on the goodness of our dime that you can function

nice one, bilox'

-------

Pool Hall Days

days fell away in zen-lucid
ball smacking cadence
it was a hazy time
we of age lived within the fog
of 'Nam and Draft
guys settled arguments with fists
and fast cars and motorcycles
smoking tires on country roads
was part of life (ain't nobody like
serious rural motorheads
we were in love out of love
inventing new candles to burn
and that soft dead clack of pool balls &
their satisfying plunk into a leather pocket
offered a respite from an angry world
a better kind of instant gratification
than most of our other available choices

beneath chain-hung metal light fixtures
we lost ourselves in the expanse
of great felt greens glowing softly
in blue swirling tobacco haze
as we executed evolving strategy
inhaling victory and defeat
with cigarette fidget
on snowy days and tee shirt nights
feeding the obsession

and as we learned to abandon control
we were rewarded with
absolute focus and
lightning cue stick magic
burning alive
in our hands

--Dean McClain,
from 'Splitsville'

A billiard table is that richest of metaphors,
by turns a theatre, an altar, touchstone, gauntlet,
ritual ground, a gunfighter's high noon, a refuge,
a verdant landscape for balls to scatter and rest in meaningful synchronicity,
a classroom, a karma dance, mirror of moods, a guide and trusted friend...

-- from grissim's "billiards"

Glad you enjoyed it. Mrs. Brooks was no shortstop:

Gwendolyn Elizabeth Brooks: American poet, author, and teacher. Born in Kansas, raised on the South Side, lived and died in Chicago. Awarded Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1950 (First African American to receive a Pulitzer Prize). Appointed Poet Laureate of Illinois in 1968, Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress 1985–86. First African-American woman inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1976. Taught extensively around the country and held posts at Columbia College Chicago, Northeastern Illinois University, Chicago State University, Elmhurst College, Columbia University, and the City College of New York.
