I don't know how they compare to today's tips, but they were pleasant to use during practice most of the time.

I know a guy who played pretty seriously with these. He would carry a bottle of clear nail polish with him and would touch it on the threads before screwing a new tip on. Locked the tip on and kept it from loosening.

Here in Tulsa there was guy who shot straight as could be-
get out from anywhere- Big table 9 ball-
I asked him,
where you learn to shoot so well-
You hardly ever play-
He was much-more interested in POKER
He said,
when he was in college there was a pool table in the frat house he belonged to-
ALL THE STICKS WERE BASIC HOUSE CUES AND NO TIPS-
PLAYED ALL THE TIME Just a tip less cue

I’ve used the same cue and type of tip for 14 years.

However, a friend has a set of screw on tips. He shaped them and and we tried them on the ‘same’ cue to experiment with straight in accuracy, using English, etc. Helped me figure out what influences my result when I attempt draw.

I use a Snooker cue for all billiards but never noticed much difference when I grabbed a pool cue with a screw on tip over one with a fixed tip.. that is if playing pool on an American table.
