Hi, gang. I haven't even visited these forums in ages, much less posted anything, so it just might be divine providence that I came here today and found this thread. Up to this time, all information and updates on Tommy were put on the GoFundMe website, and promoted through my Facebook page and a few other Facebook users' pages. I also personally shared information with several prominent people in the billiard industry whom had contacted me for such, so I guess I just assumed that someone, somewhere, would share that information here. I apologize for my oversight, and I'll try to catch you up to date now.
On March 14, Tommy passed out and fell and hit his head in a hotel bathroom while attending a tournament in Tallahassee. The fall gave him a concussion that he wasn't even aware of until symptoms and complications started showing up a couple days later. One of the complications was an inability to swallow food due to what Tommy thought to be a restriction in his esophagus. This, among other things, led to an extremely low intake of nourishment which over the next 3-4 months caused Tommy to lose an extreme amount of weight and took a drastic toll on his energy level. Further complicating matters was the inaccessibility of qualified medical help during this period of time due to the COVID-19 pandemic. All of this also affected Tommy's mental state. It became extremely hard for him to make good choices for himself and to deal with things on a day-to-day basis. So when Tommy's weight got down to 87 pounds (from 134) and he could hardly function at all, his wife Denise loaded him into the car and checked him into a hospital through the emergency ward. And it was that action that sparked a turning point for him.
A couple of days into that hospital stay, Denise called me to give me an update on Tommy and to ask my advice concerning their finances, which had reached a crucially low stage. It was at that time that I suggested the GoFundMe drive. The rest of the story on that is, as they say, history.
Tommy's hospital stay was only about a week long, but it was enough to address the issues that had been bothering him and to get him started back in the right direction, as well as get him some follow-up appointments with needed specialists. And in the weeks since his release, Tommy has been able to slowly put back on some weight. He is currently hovering around 120 pounds, so he still has a little way to go before he is back to his "normal" weight. And while he doesn't feel like he is yet ready to compete in tournaments, he is starting to put in some practice time on his home table and he feels like he is hitting the balls very well. He still has a stamina issue, and he also feels a little off-balance when he bends over the table to shoot. Those problems, he expects to be totally gone by the time the next U.S.Open 9-Ball championship rolls around.
So thank you all here for your concern and support for Tommy through his difficult moment. I'm now going to go through the GoFundMe list of contributors and see if there is a way that Tommy can send each a personal message of thanks.
See you at The Open in Vegas...whenever!
