I liked the blanketed all encompassing slam of league players on another thread so very much I thought I'd start a thread where people can discuss their pet peeves about that strange group of people who are always chirping players up trying to get them to gamble, complaining that people quit when they are winning, that you should give up your table so they can gamble on it etc.
Let's hear your thoughts on these also strange people.

Don't be shy :)

Strangeness, it's a human condition.

They say people look ugly when you're alone.

I got one! I love when a guy is trying to get you to gamble with him, and the entire time he is telling you how he:
A) Hasn't been playing for months.
B) Can't beat anybody.
C) Thinks you're stealing with whatever weight he is offering.

I can't help but respond "Then why don't you just give me your money and we'll same some time."

Gamblers vs Hustlers

I have absolutely no problem with gamblers. I do however with locksmith hustlers that come into poolrooms on League night and prey on APA or other league players that are out to enjoy themselves. At Champion Billiards in Frederick Maryland there is a POS that calls himself "Lovebug" and preys upon innocent league players. Funny thing is the POS locksmith never shows up on Thursday when the
Masters League plays. Gamblers are fine POS low life Hustlers are not!

You ever run into a guy that when you asked him to play, he said he wanted to play for fun. Then you keep edging him to play for something and he finally says OK. Then after about 10 racks you say to your self that you should have played for fun.

Not very often, because I'm fine not playing for anything. I play mostly in a small bar that doesn't get much in terms of outside players. But, yeah, I've had a few of those occasions where I'd rather just stayed playing for fun, even with friends. It's amazing what can happen over 5 or 10 bucks. Now, if you're talking about getting walked all over, I'm not sure if anybody has even gone into that bar in years with a strong enough gear to make me regret playing. Typically, I'll play friends APA 9b races and spot them a level or maybe a dollar or two playing 8 or 9.

I tried to get Rufus to play for some, but he insisted on holding out until I build up a good bankroll! :embarrassed2: He's a nice guy, refusing play a poor guy for $$.

Oh, I'm also really bad at trying to rope people into a game. I've probably done the best when I didn't want to play them for money. Kinda strange, I know.

You have the best hustle of all! Just open the window and suggest playing one hole or banks.... I couldn't fade those conditions. :)

Gamblers are strange people. They think brining gamble back into the pool room will help the rooms, but gamblers don't spend money anyway.
They also constantly ask for weight, but constantly decry handicap leagues.

"decry" is great word not used all that much. it means publicly denounce or perhaps to put down for those with less vocabulary. Anyway are you sure you should be hanging out on a pool forum. I would bet you are not one of the gamblers the POS hustler kind anyway that are being lambasted here you can find something better to do with your time.

Gamblers in my opinion meaning real gamblers who might actually take the worst of a bet and try to out run it make the poolrooms fun. They are a great addition to any room and are usually pretty good spenders. Now the robbers and thieves who only bet something when they got a lock, drink ice water and gripe a lot now that is a different kind of animal. Perhaps you need a new word as they are not gamblers, nothing they do is a gamble, perhaps you should call them "casinos" cause those places don't book many losers either. Gamblers when in action bring life to a pool room low end hustlers (casinos) suck the life out of a room.

Now take for an example a famous gambler such as Dippy Dave if he was to come into pool room with his little bag full of cash and he takes all the side action in some big time gaff game the pool room will be overflowing with people. He is not the best player but he will find a way to make a game to give him a chance and he will fire a ton of cash if he thinks he can win something. Back to the action, calls will be made to buddy's you got to come see this you ain't going to believe what is going on etc. The bar or room will be full of people and excitement and it will be good for the room even after he is gone. The same for any big action play or road man that can really stir it up, it will attract viewers and side action. Real Action Gambling is without doubt good for a pool room.

You mean the guys circling the gumball machine, betting on what color gumball comes out next. My wife and I went to the poolhall to have some fun. Played some ping pong then some pool. Guy comes over and asks if I want to play pool for money. I say no thanks. He then asks if I want to play ping pong for money. No thanks just here to have some fun.

I haven't played for money since 1990.

But I will play anyone in the world for a dollar a game and I'll play for a couple hours before I quit.

So if you are good enough...you can maybe make more than the minimum wage.

The apa has killed pool
At a 10 $ tourney everyone thinks they should get a big spot
If the gamblers ask for your table and maybe the table is diff
Like the pockets are tight because they had the room owner do that
Then I think you should give up the table no big deal
I would do the same if I was prac

The apa has killed pool

That's crazy talk, it brought thousands, maybe millions of people into the game,
and gave them a taste of playing competitively instead of just banging 'em with buddies.
I know several people who probably wouldn't play at all except for their one league night.

Those guys who want a $10 tourney to be handicapped... they're gonna be nitty
even if there's no APA available. They were just born that way, the APA didn't make them like that.
If the APA died tomorrow they wouldn't all start looking for action.

I think it's strange when someone acts like gambling is the only yardstick worth measuring by.
They'll say "whatever" to people who are proud of their league accomplishments,
or winning a local tournament.

Or even major tournaments like the mosconi cup, you hear
"yeah those other guys won. But they'd lose if they were gambling."

It's pretty obvious that the legends of pool, the guys who get remembered, are the ones
with the trophies, not whoever walked out of Eudora, Kansas in 1995 with 20,000 dollars in two weeks.

Everyone wants to know who won the US Open this year, nobody's asking
"who won the louis roberts action award this year".
