Paul Dayton- Never Forgotten

I was just going through an AZB search of Dayton cues. And I went through the archive on his web site. Really cool cues. The man knew his wood and knew his craft. Perhaps underappreciated.

Great cue maker. Perhaps some of you will see fit to show off some Dayton cues in this thread in recognition and memorial.

Here is mine. Sorry bad pics. I am no photographer and only use my cell phone. Ebony into figured maple, veneers, real ivory diamonds and dashes, matching JPs. Piloted 14 pin, classic. Excellent shaft wood, of course.

Cue was done when he was still doing "hand work" for inlays.

Aesthetically some may not like the gap between the points. Some may feel the points are short-ish. I dig the cue just the way it is. The way Paul Dayton made it. I think the balance and proportions of the design are quite nice.

Case is genuine elephant. I have thought to have this cue re-wrapped with black elephant ear. I think the cue and case pair nicely.

Classy look I think.

This cue does get played. Yes, it plays excellent. Thank you Paul Dayton for making this cue. You live on in your work. Rest In Peace.

Agree with you, Doc. Paul may not have been one of the most well known, but his cues were very nice, and precise. Still remember some early cue shows in the 90s, with some of his cues present.

All the best,
WW

Never had the chance to play with one of Pauls cues, but it is my understanding that his shaft taper was one of the best. Thank you for posting the pics Doc.
RIP Mr. Dayton.

paul also made for me recently an extension that could screw into the butt
remove the rubber bumper use the extension /remove the extension replace rubber bumper
very easy to use
no way to scratch the cue
as has been my experience using some other extensions i have tried

RIP in Mr. Dayton.

I do like his shafts. He was very much a wood guy so his shaft wood is excellent. Yes, I think the taper is really very good.

I wish I had a couple more made while he was still with us. I would have gotten his lakewood I think.

You guys got the fancy ones! Mine has four ebony points no veneers. Leather wrap and 3/8 10 pin flat faced. Brass rings and the cue plays fantastic. My pics are cell phone terrible. As always. This cue gets played...always has, always will.:grin-square:

Darn nice cue there. Fancy? Yeah, mine is a little of that, but it's a player for sure.

When I found it, it had everything I wanted, like it was made for me. And it was destined for my collection. In fact I was searching for a cue to go in that specific case. I wanted ivory, and I wanted veneers, and I wanted "hand done inlays" by a master. I think I got exactly that.

Your cue is no less a player I am sure. Inlays don't play... Had I been looking for a player, it might have been just like yours.

Thanks for posting. :)

I hope to see more in this thread. Players, collectors, and otherwise. Paul Dayton made great cues.

Been away from AZ for 4 years. Sad to hear this. Paul made me an incredible cue. Brought it to the pool hall to test it and someone bought it off me on the spot. Pretty cue but played so beautifully. Fancy sneaky, wish I took more pictures of it. It’s in NY somewhere. Would buy it back on the spot.

I lived right down the road from him in Jupiter for about 15 years. I always ran into him at various tournaments. Nice guy but also had a take no shit attitude; I can appreciate that. His cues play great and were a great value for the money. He once told me he hand cuts all of his inlays and pockets they lay into. Old school skillz when everyone else uses CNC. He made me a traditional sneaky that I still have and take into the bars. I love the way it plays.

Sorry that Paul is gone. He was a great man. Here is one he made for me a few years ago. Simple cue but beautiful. Made it just the way I wanted it.
