Can someone explain what's going on here? Is he stripping the wood off and replacing it with all new wood? What other alterations are being made?

Is the new wood on the rails a veneer, or newly made pieces altogether?

Absolutely amazing.

I'll try; Mark building the rails from scratch, replacing the original rails. He also builds a new, matching ball box from scratch. He replaces the original pedestal veneers with the matching wood. He buffs and polishes the original aircraft aluminum removing any scratches. The structure and slate are original but he does add support members to the structure.

Before making any of these beauties, he restored these tables retaining the original wood but did his magical rail work. He still does this depending on customer wishes.

One final point; the finish he uses on the rails is a tedious process of layer/cure/sand/repeat. The result is a very protective finish that protects the wood from scratches and dings. The finish is glossy and hard...almost like glass. You could literally bang a cue on the rail in a tantrum and not damage the underlying wood. The break end rail on my table looks just like all the others after 1000's of racks.

No veneers on rails. They are hand made with 3/8” cap wood. See pics

Amazing work.
And someone argued with Mark saying there is no market for that kind of work.

Yup and they argued from a position of ignorance that ultimately lead to Mark being banned from AZ which is the only reason I'm posting on his behalf. Think about it; it was like arguing with Henry Ford that an assembly line wouldn't increase productivity.

Yep, I can confirm Mark’s work is top notch. I also got my delivery of custom rails during his trip down to Texas. I ordered pro-cut walnut rails for my 9ft. Anni and they are going together like a dream. Getting the blinds and castings aligned now. The rails are already adjusted and tightened.

Those Centennials are just perfect in every way. Mark’s pockets are damn near perfect. I could never get my stock rails adjusted for anything close to BCA specs.

Every time I see that table of Chris, I can hardly believe my eyes

Having said that I usually like dark woods so both of these tables
really impress me

I would hate to have to make a choice

Next week maybe I will post pics of the new one i am getting

There is always a market for the best. Second best, not so much!

A friend paid thirty-thousand for a fiddle long ago. He had to wait a year or two to get it.
