To the forum fans and billiards, it has been this committee’s honor and pleasure to name the annual Louie Roberts Action and Entertainment Award for the past 10+ years.

  • The award is given to the person that exemplifies the terms “Action and Entertainment”
  • The winner will receive hotel and tournament entry to the three major events for the life of the Derby City Classic
  • The award itself is funded independently, and has no affiliation with the Derby City Classic itself

The votes have been tallied, and this year’s recipient for the Louie Roberts Action and Entertainment award is Jason Kirkus.

A perennial strong candidate for the award, Jason has been known year after year for putting horses in the box as well as getting in the mix himself. The stake lead in the Atlanta crew that dominates the early action rumbling at the Derby, Jason in the past has often been overlooked at the end of the event. Not to be denied this year, enough early voters kept him at the head of the pack throughout the voting. Congratulations, Jason Kirkus. You are the 2016 Louie Roberts Action and Entertainment winner!

Who are the past winners?

Do they still attend and participate in the Action and Entertainment part of the Derby?

Honestly, I'm a liar.

I had no idea the award was independently funded. That's incredible and very expensive. Wondering who funds it.

Although several of the past winners are quite successful outside of pool and one of them is a millionaire through pool.

I didn't know that either. I am assuming that the prize will continue to be given to all past winners. With the price of the rooms being 200+ per night it's worth at least a grand assuming rooms are shared. The the entry fees for all events.... x 10.

Pretty strong grant there for whomever is putting up the cheddar.

I would like to thank all of those that took the time to vote and Freddie for all his effort over the years recognizing the stimulus packages upstairs : )

I have really enjoyed all the action at the Derby despite not once coming home winner. I have always put my hard earned money in play to intensify the competition. I don't have the money some like to think I do with their silly comments or ignorant assumptions. My wife and I work very hard for our money and I enjoy creating action and being apart of the action rather than trying to decide on Denver or Carolina. I never won over a period of time doing that as well : )

Congratulations to all of those who appreciate the action and participate in it. It makes the Derby unique and the best event of the year. It's the only tournament that I attend. Couldn't afford many more : ). Honest action began to be really questioned in pool over the last 20 years and I'm proud to be one of the guys that helped bring it back. Anytime I have been involved, the winner was unknown until they won the match. Let's all keep that in mind. Unfortunately, pool has not risen to a level where many can provide for their families on so let's encourage guys who can afford to get involved for entertainment to do so instead of creating an environment that runs them off.

There is also nothing wrong with the guys that don't participate. Gambling can be a negative on anyone's life and if it becomes that, then back away. Gambling accounts are critical. You only bet what you can afford. The all in mentality for so many young players is foolish. No one should ever go busted gambling. Losing all your money or being willing to bet all your money is a disease that needs to be addressed. Have fun with it and be willing to bet what's comfortable for you and not one penny more.

Thanks again to all !

I hate I'm the last winner but we'll keep it going upstairs .....

He said it has no affiliation with Derby City Classic.

I gathered that all but the last 2 years were funded by Diamond. And the last 2 years were funded independently. If so, wow, that is a strong commitment. Thats 1100 for the hotel, and about 400 for the 3 tournmament entries. Times two for two winners, times yearly for life! Thanks to whoever put up that money!

One entity ( person or Corp ) can own different corps that legally have nothing to do with one another. Game, sure maybe - but I'm certain everyone understands why.

Congratulations Jason! You deserved it (I voted for you). Very intelligent comments by someone who knows of what he speaks. Myself personally I've been called a nit because I tend to bet in hundred dollar segments and not thousands. It's okay since I like to hang onto my money and use it for other things. I've been an addicted gambler in my life and it wasn't fun going broke in a casino after working a month to make it.

P.S. I have played pool for 1K a game (Harry and Archie and one more guy you wouldn't know). And when you open a new business and invest six figures of your own money that's gambling big time! Not to mention buying and selling million dollar pieces of property. Playing pool for a few thou is small stakes compared to that!
