The Cold Case of Biloxi Mike Surber's Murder

Mike Surber's murder has become a cold case since November of 2009. Here is a brief summary of what happened:

The death of 54-year-old Michael Surber was ruled a homicide Sunday, Ocean Springs Police Lt. John Flowers said.

"From the beginning we thought there were suspicious circumstances," Flowers said. "After viewing the autopsy results we now think there was foul play."

Flowers declined to comment about how Surber died or a possible motive for the slaying, citing the ongoing investigation.

The lieutenant did say detectives are looking for a person of interest who was captured on surveillance video with Surber the last time he was seen alive.

Surber is shown on the video leaving Skeeter's Billiards in Gulfport Tuesday night with an unidentified man, Flowers said.

Officers found Surber's body inside his home on Linda Drive at 6:20 p.m. Thursday after Gulfport Councilman Ricky Dombrowski, owner of Skeeter's, and other friends went to Surber's home in Ocean Springs to check on him.

"Mr. Surber's car had been in the parking lot for two days without moving," Flowers said.

Once there, Dombrowski said they found the house still boarded in preparation for Tropical Storm Ida. They managed to open a window and look inside. That's when they saw their friend lying on the floor, and called police, Dombrowski said.

Surber lived alone and was an avid pool player, Flowers said.

Flowers said anyone with information should call the Ocean Springs Police Department at 228-875-2211.

It is believed that Mike was killed with a knife, if my reading of the news articles since that time is correct. Mike Surber was well loved by his family and friends. He worked in the casinios most of his entire life and was an avid pool player. Please help us find the person who murdered this kind soul.

Ray Hansen (aka "Big Truck" on AzBilliards) has created a brand-new Facebook page dedicated to finding the murderer of Mike Surber called "Catch a Killer."

For those on Facebook, please share this link on your Facebook page: Catch a Killer.

I had dedicated a domain name and website immediately after this senseless murder happened, but, unfortunately, when it came time to renew this last year, the renewal notices went into my spam or else I never received them, so the website was taken down, which was my fault for not paying closer attention to the due dates of when the renewals needed to be made. :(

Bravo to Ray (Big Truck) for keeping this mission to find this murderer going. Facebook's viewership just might reach more people than the website did. Please, again, share the "Catch a Killer" Facebook page on your own Facebook page. Let's give justice to Biloxi Mike. This cold case needs to be closed with the arrest of the murderer. He's still out here, roaming the countryside.

Here is a photo of the creep who police suggest is the suspect.

In this 7-minute YouTube video, you can see the creep preying on Mike. He managed to get Mike to heave Skeeter's pool room with him. Mike offered to give him a ride somewhere, and what happened after that? Mike ends up dead by knife.

You can see this guy in the surveillance footage. Somebody has to recognize him. I am hoping Facebook will help in this regard. Please do share Catch a Killer FB page on your FB page.

In January 2010, detectives said they believed a transient man could be responsible for Surber's death and a man captured on surveillance video was named as the primary suspect.

The primary suspect was last seen wearing a blue dress shirt and dark slacks while leaving Skeeter's Billiards in Gulfport with Surber just two days before he died.

The man is believed to be his late 40s to mid-50s, standing from 5 feet 8 to 6 feet tall and weighing 175 to 185 pounds, Flowers said.

In surveillance video, the man has dirty blond hair pulled back into a ponytail just below the collar and a receding hairline.

Were Mike's cues stolen? If so, have they turned up?

Jam,

I don't post much anymore, but I still think about this case and I want to get this SOB. I didn't know mike, but I feel personally hurt because he is one of ours. Thanks for reposting. Lets keep his memory alive. No matter how long it takes we never quit trying to get justice.

How come they say that a satellite can read a newspaper on earth while the satellite is in orbit yet surveillance camera images are grainy and blurry from 20 feet away?????

That would be because the owners can't afford the technology that our tax-funded govt can.

Even though I didn't know Mike, I've taken this personally as so many others have.
I think about it quite often, and it's surprising they haven't caught this murdering creep.
The cops have his picture, they know his MO, but like JAM says it's a cold case, which is tough to hear

Look closely at the way this guy cues up his shot. Unique stance. Low-mid level player. Who stands with their legs together like this when they shoot??

I've seen bar players stand that way, it's a fundamental difference specific to hillbilly
pool, and in this case a murdering hillbilly pool player.
This creep in probably dead or in prison...maybe both

I think most will agree that the way people stand when they're shooting is almost as unique as finger prints.

Let's keep an eye out for this guy and his unique way of shooting. Drinks bud light.

adding... Gene Albrecht noticed that he chalks the cue in a unique way too.

Social Media can be of a tremendous help in keeping this "cold case" alive. This man is distinctive enough that some one out there will recognize him. Very likely he is doing time somewhere. He definitely didn't drop off the face of the earth. He is a predator.

You beat me to it. It seems that he doesn't always have the same stance though, and in fact it varies quite significantly which is pretty unusual and then each one of the stances seems fairly unusual by itself too. I wonder if he wasn't doing this intentionally to look clueless, perhaps on the stall to find an easier game? He seems to be playing real fast and one stroking most of his shots too.

If these really are his typical stances and they constantly change like that though, I would think that he most likely is fairly low level player like you said and he probably plays mostly in bars and very rarely pool halls, or at least if he does go to pool halls he isn't one of the "players" (unless he was just on the stall here, in which case maybe he could be, but to me he looks more like a genuine crappy/bar type player instead of it being an act).

Take a look at a few examples of the things that seem fairly unusual (to me anyway) and that someone might perhaps recognize him by:

As Gene Albrecht pointed out (per Ray), his chalking of the cue isn't typical in a pool hall anyway.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pC8Lv27_G4s&t=4m44s
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pC8Lv27_G4s&t=5m50s
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pC8Lv27_G4s&t=6m00s
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pC8Lv27_G4s&t=6m06s
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pC8Lv27_G4s&t=7m34s

Holds the cue unusually far away from his body when stroking the shot.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pC8Lv27_G4s&t=5m53s
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIyjcWIX8Fc&t=4m04s

Stance is more square to the shot like a snooker player, legs spread real wide, both feet are very duck footed and angle out noticeably.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pC8Lv27_G4s&t=4m55s

Feet and knees are both pretty tightly together, both legs pretty straight.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pC8Lv27_G4s&t=8m40s

Like the last shot, legs still straight and knees together but left foot is a bit further forward this time.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pC8Lv27_G4s&t=8m52s

Pretty much the same as the last two shots, legs still straight, but the left foot is even further forward this time.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pC8Lv27_G4s&t=9m07s

His feet are more separated this time, a bit closer to a typical stance but both legs are still straight.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIyjcWIX8Fc&t=1m12s

With these unusual stances and cueing, and how much his stance varies, he might be more easily recognized first by these mannerisms and maybe somebody will say in their mind "hey that reminds me of so and so who does that" and then they will look closely at the pictures of the perpetrator and notice the facial resemblance to the person they had in mind whereas it might never have clicked just from seeing the picture.

Deception Hustle

Someone in the Facebook group Catch a Killer offered up a scenario that whether it happened or not is a red flag that could cost you your life if you're a pool player.

He suggested that the guys hustle may be to lose a considerable amount gambling and then, having little money on him, gets you to give him a ride to "get it". Then robs you and gets picked up by an accomplice. Maybe this is what happened but Mike put up a fight.

Surbers cues

Since this thread I went back and looked threw my Accu-stats videos, I have the 2009 Sylver Ochoa vs: Mike Surber. In their Jay Helfert talk about Mikes cues, says he plays with two different ones. A Kersanbrock and a Srcuggs, his Kersanbrock is very rare I think it's got steel joint with fire color veneers, ebony butt with sliver or mother of pearl ovals in butt and in the points. Has a maple forarm. Also the butt is white derlin butt cap .

His Srcuggs cue is maple forarm solid ebony points, ebony butt with black butt cap. Also has a black joint and a sliver ring at joint and sliver ring above butt cap. It's pretty plain cue.
I think if someone has pictures of his cues it be good to post them, who no's it could help caught this scumbag that killed Mike. Hope this helps.
Sean.

Did nothing come of the fingerprint evidence from when this guy drove the car back to the pool hall?
